About the role

General Dynamics NASSCO is seeking Pipefitters for our Pipe Shop in Norfolk, Virginia. We are looking for 10 J1 to J4 Pipefitters to work day and night shifts.

Responsibilities

The Pipefitters are responsible for accomplishing work in accordance with work specifications safely, with the highest quality and in a professional manner. Principal responsibilities include:

  • Assuring that tank/compartment has an updated safe for hot work ticket and that requirements of the ticket have been met
  • Assuring that conditions of the tank/compartment have not changed since the ticket was written
  • Assuring that a Work Authorization Form (WAF) ticket is on the job site and that it is for the specific job being accomplished
  • Assuring that any other safety issues are complied with that relate to the specific job being accomplished
  • Assuring that you are trained or qualified for the work you are assigned to do
  • Assuring that General Dynamics-NASSCO’s Safety Procedures, including testing, are utilized for all torch work
  • Assuring that you and personnel working under your direction are working as safely and as productively as possible, maintaining quality control at all times
  • Identifying pipe class and material fittings

Requirements

Requirements for the position include:

  • Reliable transportation
  • Basic stick ruler measurements
  • Basic knowledge of hand tools and testing equipment
  • Ability to work with general supervision and complete small tasks
  • Knowledge of various testing and obstructed flows
  • Knowledge of installing various pipe hangers (Type 1 and Type 2)
  • Torch safety
  • Basic blanking and tagging knowledge
  • Basic knowledge of ship design and layout
  • Familiarity with WAFs
  • Ability to lift 50lbs
  • Familiarity with safety regulations and competent person tickets

Qualifications

Qualifications for the position vary by level (J1-J4), but may include:

  • Reading and interpreting blueprints/sketches and installing all piping systems aboard ship
  • Performing shop prefab on piping systems using sketches/templates developed from blueprints and ship check
  • Knowledge of tag out procedures for piping systems
  • Ability to hydrostatic test piping systems
  • Ability to fit and install mechanically attached fittings
  • Ability to thread piping and tap holes to proper sizes
  • Ability to prep piping for welding using grinders or beveling machines
  • Knowledge of various types of pipe and fitting materials and the proper material application in regards to piping system requirements

Skills

Skills required for the position include:

  • Pipe bending and installation
  • Knowledge of hot work procedures and requirements
  • Ability to work at heights and in confined spaces
  • Ability to lift and carry heavy objects
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment with multiple priorities

Working Relationships

This position reports to the shop supervisor and develops and maintains a positive working relationship with other Pipefitters and supports a team approach in the pursuit of common company goals.
