About the Role

A skilled Second in Command (SIC) pilot supports the Pilot-in-Command (PIC) during all aspects of flight operations, ensuring safe, compliant, and efficient flights. This rotational position operates on a two-weeks-on, two-weeks-off schedule based in Fairbanks and/or Kotzebue, AK.

Responsibilities

• Assist the Pilot-in-Command (PIC) in all aspects of flight operations, including:
  • Pre-flight tasks: preparing the cockpit, reviewing flight plans and procedures, conducting pre-flight checks.
  • In-flight tasks: monitoring and managing aircraft systems, navigation, and communication.
• Ensure adherence to regulations and procedures throughout the flight.
• Safely operate the aircraft in accordance with all applicable regulations and company policies.
• Maintain currency and proficiency in all required areas, including completing initial and recurrent training.
• Communicate effectively with air traffic control (ATC) and other parties as required.
• Maintain and update aircraft logs, records, and documentation, including flight reports, fuel logs, and incident reports.
• Follow standard operating procedures (SOPs), safety protocols, and regulatory requirements at all times.
• Prioritize the safety of passengers, crew, and the aircraft; report any safety concerns or incidents promptly.
• Manage radio communication with ATC, other aircraft, and ground personnel; relay critical information to the PIC.
• Collaborate effectively with the flight crew and ground personnel to foster a positive Crew Resource Management (CRM) environment.
• Assist in navigating the aircraft using traditional and modern methods (GPS, autopilot, etc.); cross-check navigation data.
• Provide exceptional customer service to clients.
• Participate in regular training sessions, simulator exercises, and proficiency checks to remain current and competent.
• Stay informed about updates in aviation technology, regulations, and safety procedures.

Requirements

• Meet the minimum qualifications as specified in Federal Aviation Regulation Part 135.293 flight check.
• Commercial Pilot Certificate with single-engine, land certificate and Instrument rating.
• 1,200 flight hours of experience required; turbo-prop experience preferred.
• Valid aviation second-class medical certificate issued by an authorized aviation medical examiner.
• Current driver’s license with an acceptable driving record that meets NANA’s insurance requirements.
• Thorough understanding of the company’s operations manual and all procedures related to the Pilot-in-Command position.

Working Conditions

• Environment: Diverse settings including office, airports, flight decks, and aircraft cabins; exposure to inclement weather and moderate to high noise levels.
• Physical requirements: Adequate physical fitness to handle aircraft controls, pre-flight inspections, and emergency situations; good vision (including color vision and depth perception) for navigation and instrument reading.
• Travel: Up to 100% travel to various U.S. locations, including remote areas; may require alternative transportation such as snow machines, boats, small airplanes, and ATVs.

• Problem-Solving and Adaptability: Assist the PIC in assessing and resolving unforeseen circumstances or emergencies while prioritizing safety.
