Physics Adjunct Instructor

Position Summary

The Department of Physics seeks qualified adjunct instructors to teach undergraduate physics lecture and laboratory courses. Adjunct instructors are responsible for delivering high-quality instruction, fostering student learning, maintaining academic standards, and supporting the educational mission of the department. Successful candidates will demonstrate a commitment to student success, effective teaching practices, and collaboration with departmental faculty and staff.

Essential Functions

  • Teach assigned undergraduate physics lecture and/or laboratory courses.
  • Prepare and deliver course content in accordance with departmental curriculum, learning objectives, and course policies.
  • Develop, administer, and grade examinations, quizzes, assignments, laboratory reports, and other assessments.
  • Evaluate student performance and provide timely, constructive feedback.
  • Maintain accurate records of attendance, grades, and student progress.
  • Submit common exam and final grades in accordance with university deadlines.
  • Hold scheduled office hours and provide reasonable availability to assist students outside of class.
  • Utilize the university's learning management system and other instructional technologies as required.
  • Adhere to departmental policies, university regulations, and standards of academic integrity.
  • Attend departmental meetings, orientations, and training sessions as requested.
  • For first-year physics courses, collaborate closely with the Director of First Year Physics on common examinations, course coordination, assessment activities, and other instructional requirements.
  • Promote an inclusive and supportive learning environment for students from diverse backgrounds.

Pre-Requisite Qualifications

  • Master's degree in Physics or a closely related field from an accredited institution.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of undergraduate physics principles and laboratory practices.
  • Strong communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills.
  • Able to effectively engage and support a diverse student population.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Ph.D. in Physics or a closely related field.
  • Prior college-level teaching experience.
  • Experience teaching introductory and intermediate physics lecture and laboratory courses.
  • Familiarity with modern instructional technologies, learning management systems, and online teaching platforms.

Physical Demands

  • Ability to stand and lecture for extended periods.
  • Ability to operate laboratory equipment and instructional technology.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with students, faculty, and staff.

  • Other undergraduate physics lecture and laboratory courses as assigned.

Compensation

$2668 per contact hour
