Physician (Staff Hospitalist/Nocturnist Specialist)

About the Role

This position is a full-time staff physician role within the Hospitalist section at the Syracuse Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center, with an academic appointment at SUNY Upstate Medical University commensurate with experience and education. The role involves providing general internal medicine care, supervising and educating residents and medical students, and collaborating with multidisciplinary teams.

Responsibilities

• Provide general internal medicine care for inpatient services in alignment with clinical standards of the Hospitalist Section and Medicine Service.
• Supervise and educate internal medicine residents and medical students in clinical activities.
• Participate in educational activities related to the internal medicine residency program.
• Collaborate with physician extenders and nursing care providers throughout the hospital.
• Serve as a resource for Primary Care providers to ensure smooth transitions between inpatient and outpatient settings.
• Provide expertise in multispecialty and patient care discussions.
• Engage in research, quality improvement, and teaching initiatives aligned with professional interests.
• Provide inpatient General Internal Medicine consultation services, including supervision of medical consultative house staff.
• Serve as an attending physician for inpatient internal medicine, including clinical procedures within your specialty.
• Participate in an evening jeopardy system for emergency coverage, if required.

Requirements

• United States citizenship (non-citizens may be appointed only when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens).
• Degree of Doctor of Medicine or equivalent from a school approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year the course of study was completed.
• Current, full, and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a U.S. State, Territory, Commonwealth, or the District of Columbia.
• Completion of residency training approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification. Approved residencies include:
  • Programs accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) or American Osteopathic Association (AOA).
  • One year of post-medical school training (internship, first year of residency, or transitional year) approved by ACGME or AOA, followed by two years of post-training independent practice in the U.S.
  • Non-U.S. residency training programs followed by a minimum of three years of verified independent practice in the U.S. (fellowships may count toward this requirement).
• Exceptions for residents currently enrolled in ACGME/AOA-accredited programs, who may be appointed as "Physician Resident Providers" (PRPs) with a restricted scope of practice under supervision.
• Proficiency in spoken and written English.
• Board certification (preferred).

Benefits
