Healthcare System/Hospital Description

The Krannert Institute of Cardiology, founded in 1963, has always had the goal of excellence in cardiovascular health through patient care, education, and research.

A key feature of the Krannert Institute of Cardiology is comprehensive care. Cardiologists offer expertise in the full range of heart and blood vessel problems, and treatments range all the way from life style modification to implanted heart-assist devices and transplantation. Specialized programs include heart rhythm disorder ablation and pacemaker and defibrillator implantation, coronary and peripheral vascular angioplasty, cardiomyopathy and advanced heart failure treatments, and heart valve disorders. Many advanced programs are situated at the IU Health Cardiovascular Center.

Krannert has gained an international reputation as a Center of Excellence. Its members have played prominent and leadership roles in national professional organizations, including five presidents of the American College of Cardiology, and presidencies of the Heart Rhythm Society, the American Society of Echocardiography, and the American Board of Internal Medicine. Its graduates have gone on to cardiology department or section leadership positions at Massachusetts General Hospital, University of Michigan, Duke University, University of Pennsylvania, University of Oklahoma, University of Utah, among others. It has trained cardiovascular scientists from thirteen countries. Graduates of its clinical training programs (the largest and oldest in Indiana) have established prominent cardiology groups throughout the mid-west. The Krannert Institute of Cardiology has been editorial home of two professional society journals, and its members are editors and contributors of the major cardiovascular textbooks.

Although Krannert has always been committed to comprehensive cardiovascular care, it has had particular focus and prominence in several key areas. These include clinical and basic electrophysiology (disorders of heart rhythm) and echocardiography (ultrasound imaging of the heart).

In the clinical arena, there are focused programs in advanced heart care (congestive heart failure and cardiac transplantation) and invasive cardiac and peripheral vascular intervention, as well as prevention.

The clinical activities of the Krannert Institute of Cardiology are carried out in IU Health Methodist Hospital, IU Health Indiana University Hospital, Eskanazi Health, and the Roudebush Veterans Administration Hospital. Clinical initiatives also include comprehensive service and out-patient offices at IU Health West.
