Physician (Pulmonary Diseases)

About the role

The West Palm Beach VA Medical Center seeks a Physician (Pulmonologist/Intensivist/Sleep Physician) to provide patient care for the growth and development of the pulmonology/critical care/sleep department within the context of the evolving healthcare environment.

Responsibilities

• Directs the care of all patients in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU).
• Provides continuous vigilance, early intervention, and ongoing care to decrease ICU related morbidity and mortality.
• Communicates with other members of the team to ensure optimal results.
• Performs and supervises procedures including central line placement, intubation, bronchoscopy, EBUS, thoracentesis, and others as required.
• Evaluates and recommends patients for admission to the ICU.
• Documents daily evaluations of ICU patients on a daily basis.
• Assumes the role of Code Team Leader for cardiac and respiratory arrests.
• Signed out to the oncoming physician to ensure an informed transition of care.
• Completes off-duty summary notes when leaving ICU service.
• Participates in patient care rounds with the ICU nursing staff.
• Provides outpatient and inpatient consultation services for pulmonary and sleep patients.
• Reads and interprets Sleep Studies, including home sleep studies.
• Performs procedures such as central line placement, intubation, bronchoscopy, EBUS, thoracentesis, and others as required.
• Examines and evaluates patients for admission to the ICU and notifies the admitting physician of assessment and recommendations.
• Performs subsequent evaluations of ICU patients on a daily basis.
• Responds to cardiac and respiratory arrests in the ICU.
• Participates in teaching residents and students, and directs Noon Conferences for their didactic training.
• Participates in the educational programs for critical care unit personnel and the medical staff.
• Maintains quality, safety, and appropriateness of patient care.
• Attends ICU Committee meetings and develops/update ICU policies and procedures.

Requirements

• U.S. Citizenship; non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
• Full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia.
• Completed residency training in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification.
• Proficiency in spoken and written English.
• Light to moderate lifting (15 - 44 lbs.), light carrying (15 lbs. and under), reaching above shoulder, using fingers, both hands required, walking (up to 2 hours), standing (up to 2 hours), kneeling (up to 1 hour), rapid mental and muscular coordination simultaneously, near vision correctable at 13" to 16", far vision correctable in one eye to 20/20 and to 20/40 in the other, depth perception, ability to distinguish basic colors, ability to distinguish shades of colors, hearing (aid permitted), emotional stability, mental stability, working closely with others, and working alone.

Qualifications

• Basic Requirements: Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in allopathic medicine or osteopathic medicine. Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia. Residency Training: Physicians must have completed residency training, approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification.
• Preferred Experience: Board Certification in Pulmonary Diseases or Critical Care preferred.
