Physician-Primary Care (Viera/Palm Bay)

About the role

The incumbents will serve as a Primary Care Physician located within the Viera VA Clinic or Palm Bay VA Clinic assigned to the Ambulatory Care Service. Assignments to other facilities within the Orlando VA Healthcare System (OVAHCS) and travel to the site, may be required to meet the needs of the service.

Responsibilities

• Manages chronic conditions, evaluates and treats inter-current medical conditions. Determine medical assessment and develop treatment plans according to accepted protocols.
• Collaborates with a Patient Aligned Care Team (PACT) to provide accessible, comprehensive, coordinated, continuous care to an assigned panel of patients.
• Provides comprehensive care for female veterans as a Women's Health PCP including age appropriate cervical and breast cancer screening, menopause and contraceptive management, and initial evaluation of basic gynecological concerns.
• Performs a variety of disease prevention related activities including sex and age specific screenings, mental health screenings, and health promotion activities.
• Screens for, evaluates and treats uncomplicated common mental health disorders, including depression and common addictions, with referrals made to mental health providers for further evaluation and treatment as appropriate.
• Provides Buprenorphine treatment in the management of Opioid Use Disorder per DEA guidance.
• Supervises or collaborates with primary care mid-level providers.
• Participates in peer review of other primary care providers through periodic chart reviews.
• Acts as a surrogate for absent primary care providers when needed, to include review of CPRS view alerts.
• Attends primary care staff meetings, departmental meetings and medical staff meetings.
• Documents notes and encounter forms in a timely manner in accordance with facility policy.
• Completes administrative tasks in a timely manner.
• Maintains quality of care meeting professional standards.
• Utilizes all Virtual Care modalities as expected.
• Follows up on results and completes view alerts.
• Prescribes medication according to approved formulary, and in accordance with Federal and State Law.
• Consults other specialties as appropriate, according to service agreements.
• Demonstrates flexibility in responding to clinic demands, adheres to personal and professional obligations and responsibilities, practices and maintains ethical standards, and sustains a work environment that is harmonious and customer service oriented.
• Covers unassigned/unscheduled patients or clinic when a provider is on leave or when there is a provider vacancy, urgent need.
• Manages specialty PACT such as Women's health PACT, SCI PACT, OEF/OIF PACT, Homeless or GERI PACT.
• Travels to other sites within the Health Care System to cover provider shortage.

Qualifications

• Doctor of Medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in allopathic medicine or osteopathic medicine.
• Licensure and Registration: Physicians must possess a current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a state, territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia.
• Impaired Licensure: A physician who has, or has ever had, any license(s) revoked, suspended, denied, restricted, limited, or issued/placed in a probationary status may be appointed only in accordance with the provisions of this [Handbook 5005 part II,] chapter 3, section B, [paragraphs 13 and 14].
• Waiver of Licensure: Licensure requirements may be waived by the Under Secretary for Health or designee in the VHA Central Office for individuals in research, academic, or administrative assignments involving no direct patient care responsibilities in accordance with current regulations. In addition, the facility director may waive this licensure requirement if the physician is to serve in a country other than the United States and the physician has licensure in that country.
• Residency Training: Physicians must have completed residency training, approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification.
• English Language Proficiency: Physicians appointed to direct patient-care positions must be proficient in spoken and written English as required by 38 U.S.C. § 7402(d) and 7407(d).
