Physician, Primary Care (Statewide) Part- or Full-time opportunities

About the role

The Oregon Department of Corrections seeks committed physicians to provide high-quality, patient-centered care in a correctional health setting. This role serves individuals involved in the criminal justice system, addressing health disparities and improving community health outcomes.

Responsibilities

• Conducting comprehensive medical assessments and developing treatment plans tailored to adult correctional population needs.
• Serving as a core member of a multidisciplinary treatment team, collaborating with behavioral health providers, nursing staff, and administrative leaders.
• Providing consultation and support to contract physicians and nurse practitioners, facilitating referrals to specialty care when necessary.
• Engaging in family and community consultation, and representing the department in legal proceedings.
• Managing admissions, discharges, and interventions, including surgery, special diets, and prosthetics, while ensuring secure and ethical healthcare delivery.
• Volunteering for 24-hour on-call physician backup and responding confidently to emergent medical situations.
• Documenting care accurately and efficiently with an electronic health record system, participating in quality improvement and peer review activities.
• Supporting the institution’s Affirmative Action goals and pursuing ongoing professional development and continuing medical education.

Requirements

You must have, or have the ability to obtain, a current Physician's license issued by the Oregon Board of Medical Examiners at the time of appointment. Board certification in internal or family medicine is preferred.

You should have knowledge of principles and practices of primary care and internal or family medicine, diagnosis and management of common acute, urgent, and chronic medical conditions, evidence-based clinical guidelines, ethical obligations, trauma-informed care, and professional boundaries.

Skills include conducting comprehensive medical assessments, ordering and interpreting diagnostic tests, generating differential diagnoses, managing complex medical conditions, responding to emergent and urgent medical situations, documenting accurately and efficiently with an electronic health record system, collaborating with interdisciplinary teams, and participating in quality improvement and peer review activities.

Qualifications

Minimum qualifications include a current Physician's license issued by the Oregon Board of Medical Examiners at the time of appointment. Additional qualifications include board certification in internal or family medicine, knowledge of principles and practices of primary care and internal or family medicine, diagnosis and management of common acute, urgent, and chronic medical conditions, evidence-based clinical guidelines, ethical obligations, trauma-informed care, and professional boundaries.

Preferred qualifications include experience with correctional or underserved community health.
