About the role

MEDIKO is a mission-driven healthcare provider dedicated to delivering high-quality medical care in correctional settings. We seek a Physician to join our team, providing comprehensive medical care to patients in a correctional healthcare setting.

Responsibilities

  • Provide comprehensive medical care to patients, including diagnosing, treating, and managing acute and chronic medical conditions.
  • Collaborate with nursing and other healthcare staff to develop and implement treatment plans, prescribe medications, and ensure high-quality patient care.
  • Maintain accurate medical records and adhere to healthcare regulations and facility policies.
  • Conduct thorough medical assessments, including H&Ps, to diagnose conditions and develop individualized treatment plans for patients.
  • Address both acute and chronic medical conditions, prescribe medications, therapies, and other medical interventions as necessary, ensuring safe and effective treatment.
  • Monitor and adjust treatment plans based on patient progress and evolving health needs.
  • Work closely with PAs, APRNs, Nurses, and other healthcare professionals to provide coordinated, holistic care for inmates.
  • Participate in case discussions and treatment plan development, ensuring a collaborative approach to patient care.
  • Provide medical care for patients with mental health conditions, working in collaboration with Psychiatrists or other mental health specialists.
  • Respond to and manage medical emergencies, including trauma, psychiatric crises, and other urgent health situations, ensuring immediate, effective interventions.
  • Provide leadership in emergency medical responses.
  • Educate patients on managing chronic conditions, preventing health issues, and understanding treatment plans.
  • Advocate for inmate health needs and contribute to a supportive environment for all individuals in care.
  • Document promptly and properly.
  • Participate in continuous quality improvement (CQI) initiatives aimed at enhancing patient care and clinical outcomes.
  • Adhere to infection control, safety, and security protocols while maintaining high standards of care within the correctional environment.
  • Provide education, mentorship, and guidance to healthcare staff, including physicians, nurses, and other providers, on best practices, medical protocols, and evolving standards of care.
  • Serve as a medical leader within the facility, supporting and mentoring other healthcare providers.
  • Assist in identifying opportunities for improving care delivery, workflow, and the overall healthcare environment.
  • Participate in Call-by-Phone coverage rotation, to ensure continuity of care and address urgent healthcare needs of inmates.
  • Work with correctional officers and facility leadership to ensure healthcare needs of inmates are met while maintaining security and safety within the correctional setting.
  • Address any barriers to care resulting from the correctional environment.
  • Uphold the highest standards of professional ethics, ensuring that all medical practices comply with federal, state, and local regulations, as well as institutional policies.
  • Maintain patient confidentiality at all times and follow all legal and ethical guidelines in healthcare delivery.

Requirements

  • A current, valid, and unrestricted license to practice medicine in the State of California (MD or DO).
  • Post graduate training in a primary discipline such as Family Medicine, Internal Medicine, Emergency Medicine, or related specialty.
  • Hold an Active and Unrestricted DEA Registration, or be willing to obtain registration.
  • Board Certification in a relevant specialty is preferred.
  • Experience in a correctional facility or other setting with underserved cohorts is helpful.
  • Active CPR/BLS certificate required (American Heart Association/American Red Cross guideline approved) prior to Start Date.

Schedule

This position is on-site for 16 hours per week.
