Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP)

This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program, a student loan repayment program. Applicants must meet specific VHA eligibility requirements and submit the EDRP application within four months of appointment. Award amounts (up to $200,000) and eligibility periods (one to five years) are determined by the VHA Education Loan Repayment Services after review. Former EDRP participants are ineligible to apply.

Qualifications

To qualify, candidates must satisfy the basic requirements listed below and any additional requirements noted in the job announcement. Applicants pending training or license completion may be tentatively selected but cannot be hired until all requirements are met. Currently employed VA physicians who met the previous qualification standard at the time of their initial appointment are deemed to have met the basic requirements.

Basic Requirements

  • United States citizenship (non‑citizens may be appointed only when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA policy).
  • Doctor of Medicine (MD) or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO) degree from a school approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year of graduation.
  • Current, full, and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a U.S. State, Territory, Commonwealth, or the District of Columbia.

Residency Training

Physicians must have completed residency training approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty program leading to eligibility for board certification.

  • Accredited residencies approved by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) or the American Osteopathic Association (AOA) as listed for the year the residency (or fellowship, if applicable) was completed.
  • One year of post‑medical‑school training (internship or transitional year) approved by ACGME or AOA followed by two years of independent practice under a full, unrestricted license in the United States.
  • Non‑U.S. residency training programs followed by a minimum of three years of verified independent practice in the United States (U.S. fellowships count toward this requirement) deemed appropriate by the local Medical Staff Executive Committee.

Exceptions

  • Residents currently enrolled in ACGME/AOA accredited residency programs who otherwise meet the basic requirements may be appointed as “Physician Resident Providers” (PRPs). PRPs must hold a full, unrestricted license and are appointed on an intermittent basis; they are not considered independent practitioners and have a limited scope of practice under supervision.
  • Surgery residents in gap years may also be appointed as PRPs.
  • In rare circumstances, the Facility Director may request a memo to the VISN Director (through the VISN Chief Medical Officer) for a reasonable exception to the residency training requirement based on the physician’s composite record of experience, accomplishments, performance, and qualifications.

Preferred Experience

  • Board certified in Family Medicine or Internal Medicine.

Responsibilities

  • Manage medical care for a panel of Veterans enrolled in Primary Care.
  • Timely entry and use of the electronic medical record system for documentation, workload capture, alert management, and review of Veterans’ current and future medical care needs.
  • Serve as the leader of the Patient Aligned Care Team (PACT).
  • Cross‑cover for other medical providers as needed throughout the health‑care system.
  • Collaborate with PACT members to ensure overall safety and quality of each Veteran’s care.
  • Be responsible for all performance metrics related to patient quality of care.
  • Provide positive customer service in all aspects of care.
  • Participate in quality improvement, quality assurance, continuous survey readiness, and committee/work‑group activities in collaboration with others.
  • Maintain licensures and certifications required for credentials and privileges at the OKC VAHCS.
  • Meet ethical and professional standards as written in the Medical Staff Bylaws and ensure compliance with facility standards and expectations.

Work Schedule

  • Retirement: Traditional federal pension (5‑year vesting) and federal 401(k) with up to 5 % VA contributions.
  • Insurance: Federal health, vision, dental, term life, and long‑term care coverage (many programs can be carried into retirement).
  • Licensure: One full, unrestricted license from any U.S. State or territory.
  • CME Reimbursement: Up to $1,000 per year (must be full‑time with board certification).
