Responsibilities
- Assists the physician in assessing patient needs through history, observation, physical exam, telephone triage, and analysis of diagnostic data.
- Performs direct patient care including triage, assessment, procedures, treatments, patient education, discharge and follow-up instructions.
- Prepares patients to be seen by the physician and formulates the initial database by collecting pertinent information through communication with patient and family, observation, and objective evaluation.
- Records patient data in the medical record, including vital signs, history, chief complaint, and all relevant information.
- Performs specialized tests such as audiometry, electrocardiography, inhalation treatments, and selected laboratory procedures as needed.
- Prepares medications and administers injections as ordered by the physician; assists with treatments and procedures as needed.
- Provides patient education appropriate to the situation and schedules testing and referral appointments per physician instructions.
- Consults with patients on telephone calls, addressing issues or referring calls to the physician; performs follow-up calls as necessary.
- Cleans and straightens examination rooms between patients according to OSHA standards; maintains clean instruments and examination rooms.
- Sets up and maintains equipment, notifying the office manager or appropriate personnel of any malfunction.
- Maintains medical supply inventory, checks expiration dates on drugs and vaccines, disposes of outdated medications, and orders medical supplies.
- Develops and maintains working knowledge of all equipment needed to perform duties.
- Promotes a climate conducive to learning and encourages co-workers’ formal and informal continuing education.
- Assists with overall review of quality of patient care by performing chart audits and prescribed data collection; participates in departmental QA projects.
- Promotes the practice mission and philosophy, projects a positive image, and demonstrates willingness to perform duties of other department personnel when workload requires.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- Computer skills required.
- Basic Life Support certification must be obtained within 90 days of hire.
Requirements
- Licensed Practical Nurse.
- Basic Life Support certification.
