Physician - Inpatient Spinal Cord (Recruitment/Relocation & EDRP Authorized)

About the role

This is an OPEN CONTINUOUS ANNOUNCEMENT and will remain open until September 30, 2026. The initial cut-off date for referral of eligible applications and subsequent cut-off dates are on the 1st of each month. Eligible applications received after that date will be referred at regular intervals or as additional vacancies occur on an as-needed basis until positions are filled.

Responsibilities

• May work in one or all the following units: SCI Inpatient wards, SCI Clinic, and as a consultant to facility wide services.
• Reports to the Assistant Chief Spinal Cord Injury.
• Admits, evaluates, diagnoses, and provides treatment or consultative services to patients in need of SCI care.
• Provides care to patients and participates in the physician on call rotation.
• Reviews interfacility consults (IFC) and provides consultative services to spoke site providers as needed.
• Reviews new injury referrals and decides if patients are appropriate for SCI center services.
• Maintains service line performance measures and investigates issues within inpatient/outpatient services.
• Supervises and evaluates midlevel providers assigned to the service.
• Attends meetings and acts as a representative for the SCI Service Chief.
• Performs as acting SCI Service Chief in absence of the SCI Service Chief and Assistant SCI Service Chief.
• Performs other duties as assigned by the SCI Service Chief.
• Complies with customer service protocols and demonstrates professionalism.
• Fulfills computer security policies and adheres to HIPAA requirements.

Requirements

To qualify for this position, you must meet the basic requirements as well as any additional requirements (if applicable) listed in the job announcement. Applicants pending the completion of training or license requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. Currently employed physician(s) in VA who met the requirements for appointment under the previous qualification standard at the time of their initial appointment are deemed to have met the basic requirements of the occupation.

Qualifications

• United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
• Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia.
• Completed residency training in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification.
• Proficiency in spoken and written English.
• Preferred: Certification in the subspecialty of Spinal Cord Injury Medicine.
