About the role
The Hospitalist is responsible for maintaining professional, technical, and administrative knowledge, competencies, and skills to provide effective, timely, and quality responses to patients with acute or emergent health care problems. The incumbent will provide professional patient care approximately 50% of the time and administrative duties 50% of the time.
Responsibilities
- Function as the facility's medical officer during regular business hours, as well as specified weekend, holiday, evening, or night (WHEN) hours.
- Provide admission and discharge management for inpatient units outside of regular administrative hours.
- Assess patients that may require Emergency Room transportation if called.
- Work with clinical staff, supervisors, managers, and team leaders to achieve and maintain high standards of performance.
- Participate in the development of long- and short-term goals for the continued improvement of medical services throughout the organization.
- Serve as advisor to the Chief of Staff, Associate Director, Associate Director for Nursing and Patient Care Services, and Facility Director on issues related to direct patient care during WHEN duty hours.
- Function as collaborating provider for Advance Practice Nurses/Nurse Practitioners, Physician Assistants, and Clinical Pharmacy Specialists as needed.
- Participate on Medical Center committees, workgroups, and systems redesign projects as needed.
- Contribute to the development and implementation of policies and procedures that guide and support the provision of services to patients during regular business and WHEN hours.
- Facilitate compliance with standards established by oversight and regulatory entities such as Joint Commission, CARF, OSHA, CAP, OIG, etc.
- Provide coverage as Employee Health Physician during WHEN hours and backup coverage during regular administrative hours.
- Provide coverage for Extended Primary Care during WHEN hours if required.
- Ensure timely completion of all program evaluations and documents associated with clinical care reviews and medical advisory opinions by the Medical Center, VISN, and/or VACO.
- Ensure that Reusable Medical Equipment systematic processes are utilized.
- Assist in reading EKGs and Pulmonary Function Tests for the facility, if required.
- Comply with the Green Environmental Management System (GEMS) goals, including completing environmental aspect/impact analysis in collaboration with the GEMS Coordinator and implementing operation strategies for regulatory compliance and environmental performance improvement.
- Consider environmentally preferable and recycled products in all purchasing decisions.
- Hold daily checkouts with incoming/outgoing MODs.
- May serve as PACT Navigator for the facility while on duty.
- Comply with Cultural Transformation & Patient Centered Care goals, reinforcing perception of excellent care through cultural transformation and patient-centered improvement projects.
