Physician Hospitalist

About the role

The Hospitalist Physician provides medical care as the attending of record for adult inpatients (minimum age 18) presenting with primary internal medicine pathology, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Responsibilities include admitting patients from the Emergency Department, providing consults for other specialties, and directly admitting patients from outside facilities as specified by SCHS hospital medical staff bylaws.

Provider will render services at SCHS facilities, primarily at St. Charles Bend Hospital (2500 NE Neff Rd, Bend, OR) and St. Charles Redmond Hospital (1253 NW Canal Boulevard, Redmond, OR).

Schedule

Shifts are generally 10–11 hours in duration. Physician will work a minimum of 166 annual shifts. Scheduling options include a 7-day rotation or flex scheduling. Back-up call is required and evenly distributed throughout the year among all daytime hospitalists.

Responsibilities

• Provide 24-hour coverage for Medicine patients on the Bend campus in both admitting and consultative roles, per existing Co-Management Agreements.
• Provide 24-hour coverage for Medicine and Critical Care (if privileged) patients at the Redmond campus in both admitting and consultative roles, per existing Co-Management Agreements.
• Serve as a consultant for inpatient psychiatric patients in PES or Sageview when requested by the primary service.
• Serve as a consultant for medically complex patients in Inpatient Rehabilitation.
• Round on assigned patients with the care team and document daily plans of care.
• Update hospital course progression and significant events in the “Care Coordination Note.”
• Maintain an updated “Problem List” with current active problems only.
• Order labs, imaging, and future tests as appropriate.
• Place orders during rounds (medications, labs, imaging, communication orders).
• Consult specialists and answer critical/non-critical patient questions from staff, placing orders as necessary.
• Teach staff and families about treatment plans and facilitate family meetings/goals of care discussions.
• Participate in multidisciplinary rounds and take histories/review of systems from patients/families.
• Perform physical exams, review outside records, complete full H&Ps, order diagnostic studies, and coordinate among providers.
• Write H&Ps, consults, progress notes, and discharge summaries.
• Sign death certificates and perform procedures (e.g., central lines, arterial lines) consistent with medical staff privileges.
• Provide targeted assessment, diagnosis, and treatment for acute and chronic medical conditions.
• Utilize a team-based care model, leveraging expertise from the multidisciplinary team.
• Collaborate in education with residents and medical students.
• Monitor effectiveness of the plan of care and educate patients/families on diagnoses and treatment plans.
• Consult with other healthcare providers as appropriate and share equitable workload distribution among hospitalist physicians.
• Participate in Rapid Response Supervision as requested.
• Maintain familiarity with SCMG organization structure, communication systems, billing processes, and complete billing/coding documentation on time.
• Document all patient care in the Electronic Medical Record (EMR) in compliance with health system policies and regulatory agencies.
• Participate in provider meetings and assist in policy formation for SCHS and the practice.
• Maintain current clinical knowledge and skills through regular CME activity to meet board certification and compliance requirements.
• Model respect, professionalism, and kindness in accordance with the ACTS of Excellence.

Requirements

• Graduation from an accredited medical school.
• Successful completion of an accredited residency program in the chosen specialty.
• Board certification or eligibility in the specialty being practiced (certification required within seven years of residency/fellowship completion).
• Current, unrestricted license as MD/DO.
• Unrestricted Federal DEA number and ability to participate in Medicare/Medicaid or other federal/state healthcare programs.
• Valid driver’s license and ability to meet SCHS driving requirements.
• ACLS certification (additional certifications may be required based on privileges granted).
• Experience in hospital practice environments and using EMR software.
• Advanced written and verbal communication skills for interacting with a diverse population.
• Experience working in a team environment and proven ability to collaborate with healthcare professionals.

Preferred Qualifications

• Oregon medical license and Federal DEA Number registered in Oregon.
• Prior experience in process improvement work and standard work development.
• Strong team-building skills and ability to work well in a rapidly changing environment.
