Physician - Hematologist/Oncologist
About the role
The Richmond VA Medical Center is seeking a skilled BE/BC Hematologist/Oncologist with a keen interest in teaching, clinical care, and clinical research to join the Hematology and Oncology section, Medical Service, at the Central Virginia VA Health Care System (CVHCS) and Virginia Commonwealth University.
Responsibilities
- Reviewing charts, examining, and treating patients in ambulatory clinic, procedure clinic, infusion clinic, and inpatient wards (consultation).
- Treating patients using thrombolytic agents, performing procedures like thoracentesis, paracentesis, joint aspirations, foley catheter placement, nasogastric tube placement, bone marrow aspiration and biopsy, administering chemotherapy, targeted therapies, immunotherapies, managing therapeutic phlebotomy, collaborating with midlevel providers, and communicating clearly with physician colleagues.
- Teaching more than 15 fellows who have their weekly continuity clinic at the VA and conducting research in collaboration with many Richmond VA Cancer Center’s physician-scientists and clinical investigators.
- Assisting with the administration and coordination of the fellowship program.
- Attending relevant patient care conferences, Hematology/Oncology team meetings, and participating in quality assurance programs and chart reviews.
- Participating in Medicine Service monthly staff meetings and COS quarterly meetings.
- Completing medical records in accordance with Bylaws and Rules and Regulations of the Medical Staff.
- Participating in Medical Staff committee assignments as directed.
- Performing other duties assigned by the Chief of Medicine or his Associate.
- Attending CME activities and VA continuing educational activities.
- Conducting research and performing administrative components of clinical research conducted through McGuire Cancer Center, participating in local or central IRB approved clinical research, maintaining CITI certification, and performing miscellaneous activities of the Medical Service.
Requirements
The Richmond VA Medical Center is seeking a skilled BE/BC Hematologist/Oncologist with a keen interest in teaching, clinical care, and clinical research to join the Hematology and Oncology section, Medical Service, at the Central Virginia VA Health Care System (CVHCS) and Virginia Commonwealth University. The position requires a current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia. Residency training must be approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification.

To qualify for this position, you must meet the basic requirements as well as any additional requirements (if applicable) listed in the job announcement. Applicants pending the completion of training or license requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. Currently employed physician(s) in VA who met the requirements for appointment under the previous qualification standard at the time of their initial appointment are deemed to have met the basic requirements of the occupation.
