Physician-Gastroenterologist

About the role

This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP), a student loan payment reimbursement program. You must meet specific eligibility requirements per VHA policy and submit your EDRP application within four months of appointment. Program Approval, award amount (up to $200,000) & eligibility period (1 to 5 years) are determined by the VHA Education Loan Repayment Services program office after review of the EDRP application. Former EDRP participants are ineligible to apply.

Responsibilities

• Provide comprehensive medical and selected specialty services for outpatients.
• Perform outpatient examinations, consultation services related to Gastroenterology, and management of patients with current treatment regiments.
• Diagnose, treat, and manage patients according to standard, usual, and acceptable methods, and techniques.
• Manage and perform upper endoscopy & related procedures (dilatation, sclerotherapy, injection or thermal hemostasis, foreign body removal, mucosal biopsy, polypectomy, percutaneous gastrostomy/jejunostomy).
• Perform colonoscopies and related procedures (dilatation, sclerotherapy, injection or thermal hemostasis, foreign body removal, mucosal biopsy, polypectomy, colonic decompression).
• Perform flexible sigmoidoscopy & proctoscopy with mucosal biopsy (certification in colonoscopy indicates certification in this category, separate reporting not necessary).
• Insert esophageal stents.
• Provide clinic services including patient examinations, contacting patients with procedure results, and consult triaging, five days per week.
• Manage and perform GI procedures as needed.

Qualifications

• United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
• Medical Degree: Must have obtained from an institution whose accreditation was in place for the year in which the course of study was completed. Approved schools are those accredited by the LCME or COCA.
• License: Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia.
• Residency Training: Physicians must have completed residency training, approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification.
• Experience: Competency in the areas of Gastroenterology clinic, examination of patient, establishing medical diagnoses, performing inpatient and outpatient GI consultations, upper endoscopy, colonoscopies, flexible sigmoidoscopy, and esophageal stent insertion.
• Specialized Experience: Desired trained and/or expertise in neurogastroenterology, and/or ESD, EUS, ERCP, and/or ABIM Transplant Hepatology BE/BC.
