Physician, Cardiothoracic Surgery / Medical Director, Cardiac Surgery Quality & Outcomes

About the role

The Cardiothoracic Surgeon / Medical Director, Cardiac Surgery Quality & Outcomes provides comprehensive adult cardiothoracic surgical care while serving as physician leader for NorthBay Health's Cardiac Surgery Quality Program.

Responsibilities

• Perform the full spectrum of adult cardiothoracic surgical procedures.
• Evaluate, diagnose, and manage patients with coronary artery disease, valvular heart disease, thoracic aortic disease, and other complex cardiac and thoracic conditions.
• Collaborate with cardiology, electrophysiology, vascular surgery, pulmonology, oncology, gastroenterology, cardiac anesthesia, and critical care teams to provide coordinated, multidisciplinary patient care.
• Participate in Structural Heart and multidisciplinary Heart Team conferences.
• Provide inpatient consultation, postoperative management, and outpatient follow-up care.
• Educate patients and families regarding treatment options, operative planning, and postoperative recovery.
• Lead the Cardiac Surgery Quality Program, including STS registry performance review and quality improvement initiatives.
• Develop and implement clinical pathways and evidence-based practices to improve patient outcomes.
• Participate in multidisciplinary quality meetings, including morbidity and mortality conferences.
• Partner with physician, nursing, anesthesia, perfusion, rehabilitation, and quality teams to optimize cardiovascular outcomes.
• Mentor physicians, advanced practice providers, and clinical staff while fostering a culture of continuous improvement.
• Collaborate with Heart & Vascular leadership on strategic planning, physician integration, and regional cardiovascular program development.

Qualifications

• MD or DO degree.
• Completion of an accredited Cardiothoracic Surgery residency or fellowship.
• Board Certified or Board Eligible in Thoracic Surgery.
• Active and unrestricted California medical license (or ability to obtain prior to employment).
• Demonstrated excellence in adult cardiothoracic surgery.
• Experience with complex valve surgery; advanced mitral valve repair preferred.
• Experience participating in Structural Heart and multidisciplinary Heart Team programs preferred.
• Leadership experience in quality improvement, physician mentorship, or cardiovascular program development preferred.
• Participation in STS quality initiatives or other national cardiovascular quality programs preferred.
• Excellent communication, leadership, and collaborative practice skills.
• Ability to work effectively within a multidisciplinary team environment.

Skills

• Advanced mitral valve repair and reconstructive valve surgery experience preferred.
• Experience with complex valve surgery.
• Experience participating in Structural Heart and multidisciplinary Heart Team programs.
• Leadership experience in quality improvement, physician mentorship, or cardiovascular program development.
• Participation in STS quality initiatives or other national cardiovascular quality programs.
• Excellent communication, leadership, and collaborative practice skills.

Benefits

• Compensation listed is commensurate of 1.0 FTE employed Physician 1.0 FTE W2- Total Compensation (Year 1) up to $1,066,722.
• Compensation package may include; Income Guarantee years 1-2: $778,000 Sign on bonus up to $40,000 Relocation Assistance for qualified candidates up to $20,000 Retention bonus (beginning year 2) $30,000 CME/Dues up to $8,000 annually Production Incentive Quality Incentive Program at year 3 Medical Directorship compensation $280 per hour.
