Functions or Scope of Assigned Duties
- Prepare and interpret blood and bone marrow samples.
- Analyze blood samples using computer-aided and manual techniques.
- Review initial data that may reveal abnormalities in white or red blood cells, platelets or clotting factors.
- Decide on additional hematologic testing.
- Prescribe treatment for individual patients.
- Investigate the biochemistry of blood clotting.
- Assist colleagues in the interpretation of hematologic test results.
- Select appropriate techniques for different types of hematological analysis.
- Work as part of a multidisciplinary team that may include bone marrow transplantation specialists, hematologic subspecialists, or hematopathologists.
- Teach or train medical students and other hospital staff.
- Provide education and counseling to patients.
- Maintain accurate and detailed records.
Supervisory Controls
The Hematologist/Oncologist functions under the Chief of the Hematology-Oncology Section, the ACOS, Medicine Service and the Chief of Staff. Compliance with all health care system policies, rules, regulations, and by-laws is expected.
Qualifications
U.S. Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia.
Residency Training: Physicians must have completed residency training, approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification.
Subspecialty board certification/eligibility in Internal Medicine from the American Board of Internal Medicine.
Proficiency in spoken and written English.
