About the role

The Hematology/Sickle Cell Physician Assistant functions in both outpatient/ambulatory and inpatient settings, delivering direct patient care under the general (direct or indirect) supervision of a licensed and Board-Certified Physician. This role supports patients and hematologists by coordinating and providing high-quality care to patients with complex hematologic diseases.

Responsibilities

• Participates in outpatient/ambulatory care, including new and follow-up patient visits, coordination of care, and rendering prescribed treatments.
• Provides inpatient consultation, care, rounds, and consultations under the direction of supervising physicians.
• Performs medical evaluations, including histories, physical examinations, ordering/interpreting diagnostic tests, and prescribing medications in conjunction with supervising physicians.
• Documents patient care appropriately in medical charts.
• Performs perioperative management, including preoperative assessments and postoperative evaluations.
• Performs routine or emergency procedures such as pap smears, wound irrigation and suturing, drainage of abscesses, insertion of nasogastric tubes and intravenous lines, arterial blood sampling, etc.
• Writes appropriately authorized prescriptions, including controlled substances.
• Initiates or participates in the initial management and stabilization of medical or surgical emergencies.
• Assists in or performs bedside procedures as appropriate.
• Assists in operative procedures as a first assistant when appropriate.
• Educates patients, families, and caregivers about disease processes, treatment plans, and post-treatment care.
• Participates in multidisciplinary tumor boards and collaborates with the care team to ensure continuity of care.
• Collaborates with physicians, residents, nursing, and other team members to deliver optimum patient care.
• Confers regularly with supervising physicians to keep them apprised of clinical developments.
• Performs other clinical duties such as arranging follow-up, obtaining informed consent, recalling patients, and escorting patients as needed.
• Informs patients of necessary post-discharge instructions.
• Participates in clinical research, including maintaining research databases and coordinating clinical trials.
• Ensures adherence to department and hospital policies concerning patient care standards.
• Participates in the training of new employees and students, ensuring departmental standards are met.
• Engages in ongoing quality improvement activities and special projects as assigned.
• Stays informed of patient management trends through literature and continuing medical education.
• Represents the department on hospital-wide committees as assigned.

Requirements

• Graduation from an accredited Review Commission on Education for the Physician Assistant (ARC-PA) program, approved by the New York State Education Department.
• Minimum Bachelor’s degree in Physician Assistant Studies from an ARC-PA–accredited PA program (Master’s degree required for those hired after 2026).
• Current certification by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA).
• Current and unrestricted Physician Assistant (PA) license in New York State.
• Current unrestricted DEA certificate for mid-level providers (Full schedule: 2, 2N, 3, 3N, 4, 5).
• New York State Mandated Infection Control Course Certificate.
• American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS) and/or Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certifications as required by the department.
• Specialized certification may be required for specific skills (e.g., central line, PICC, ultrasound, advanced airway).
• Demonstrates professionalism, knowledge, and ability to diagnose and treat medical/surgical problems under physician supervision.
• Ability to interact effectively with hospital staff, patients, and family members.
• Manual dexterity and physical strength necessary for clinical duties, including lifting and positioning patients.
• Strong work ethic and commitment to a team-oriented, collaborative, and mission-driven institution.
• Excellent interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills, including a strong bedside manner.

Pay

The salary range for this role is $68.5182 - $91.3576 per hour, depending on experience, education, and operational need.
