Physician Assistant-Outpatient Nephrology

About the Role

A professional individual contributor role that may direct the work of other lower-level professionals or manage processes and programs. This senior-level position requires advanced knowledge typically obtained through advanced education and work experience. Responsibilities include managing projects and processes, working independently with limited supervision, coaching and reviewing the work of lower-level professionals, and resolving complex problems.

This role focuses on providing high-quality patient care and promoting wellness, working collaboratively with physicians and other healthcare professionals to diagnose and treat acute and chronic conditions. Under the supervision of licensed physicians, duties include conducting comprehensive patient assessments, ordering and interpreting diagnostic tests, diagnosing and treating conditions, developing and implementing treatment plans, prescribing medications, performing procedures, and educating patients and families on treatment options and preventive care.

Responsibilities

• Manages a broad spectrum of patients and performs a wide range of clinical, diagnostic, and therapeutic procedures.
• Assesses the health status of patients by obtaining medical histories, performing physical examinations, and ordering laboratory and diagnostic studies in collaboration with the healthcare team.
• Diagnoses health and developmental problems and cares for patients with acute and chronic diseases.
• Assesses patient/family psychosocial needs, educational needs, learning readiness, and barriers to learning.
• Examines patients, records findings, and discriminates between normal and abnormal results to identify early stages of serious physical or emotional problems.
• Consults with physicians concerning patient evaluation and condition.
• Develops individualized, comprehensive care plans using established standards of care, knowledge of disease entities, and consideration of patient age, growth, and emotional, social, and spiritual needs.
• Communicates professionally with patients, families, practitioners, physicians, and coworkers.
• Sets priorities and modifies patient care in response to changing situations.
• Orders appropriate labs and radiological testing based on patient needs.
• Maintains accurate patient records, charts, and documentation for administrative purposes.
• Demonstrates appropriate prescribing habits and encourages preventative medicine through patient education and counseling.
• Interprets patient needs to other clinical personnel and contributes to care plans.
• Works collaboratively with physicians to manage patient care cost-effectively.
• Utilizes organizational skills to complete assigned work effectively and on time.
• May orient and train new Physician Assistants, coordinate staff schedules, assist with performance evaluations, and provide guidance on team building.
• May participate in rounds with residents, complete daily patient management assignments, and assist with patient care and disposition.
• Handles medical emergencies during regular working hours on the inpatient service.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree.
• Successful completion of a Physician’s Assistant program.
• Physician’s Assistant licensure within the first three months following receipt of a complete application for medical staff membership and privilege.
• Physician’s Assistant Certification.
• Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.

Preferred Qualifications

• State and federal controlled substances registration.

Physical Requirements

• Lifting and turning patients of 30-35 lbs.
• Prolonged standing and walking.
• Occasional twisting, bending, reaching, pushing/pulling, sitting, kneeling, and squatting.
• Exposure to infectious diseases, possible carcinogenic chemicals, and blood-borne pathogens.
• Manual dexterity for performing procedures and using a computer keyboard.
• Ability to see computer screens and reports, and assist in procedures with accuracy.
• Ability to hear instructions from physicians.

• Effective interpersonal skills for interacting with physicians, staff, patients, and families.
• Excellent analytical skills for evaluating patients and coordinating treatment plans.

Pay

The base pay range for this role is $124,800.00 - $156,000.00. Individual offers are determined using a comprehensive approach that considers relevant experience, certifications, education, skills, and internal equity to ensure fair and competitive compensation.
