Summary Of Position

Responsible for carrying out the physician’s orders regarding administration of medications – Methadone. This individual is also responsible for the completeness of all medical aspects of the medical record – including any paper documentation and all entries to the electronic health record system.

Role And Responsibilities

  • Ensures appropriate laboratory studies have been performed and reviewed, as needed.
  • Ensures that a medical evaluation, including a medical history and physical examination, has been performed at admission and annually and compliance with federal, state and DEA regulations, prior to initial methadone dose.
  • Completes physical examinations, that include a medical history, an examination of body systems on all patients; and presents medical forms for the clinical physician’s evaluation, consultation, and signature.
  • Ensures evidence of current physiologic dependence, length of history of addiction, and exceptions to criteria for admission are documented in the patient’s record before the patient received the initial methadone dose.
  • Completes follow up medical appointments and supports the physicians/medical director in most areas outside of dosing determinations for methadone. All initial methadone orders and dose change orders supervised by the physician.
  • Provides education to patients on the risks and benefits of opiate treatment and medical issues surrounding the use of methadone.
  • Follows the guidelines for the safety and treatment of high-risk patients (e.g., pregnant women, patients with HIV, and IV drug users).
  • Collaborates with clinical staff and other medical providers to coordinate care.
  • Aids patients in referral services for other medical issues (co-occurring illnesses) and other medical needs.
  • Participates in continuous quality improvement activities (in-service education and patient education).
  • Ensures medication orders comply with State/DEA Regulations and HIPAA/CARF Standards.

Education, License/Certifications and Experience

  • Current, Active Unrestricted License to practice medicine in the State of Colorado
  • 1 year experience as Nurse Practitioner or Physician’s Assistant in medication assisted treatment in an opiate treatment setting.
  • Must pass criminal background check.
  • CPR certified within 3 months of hire for Nurse Practitioner.
  • Current DEA License.

  • Knowledge of Opioid Treatment and Medication, ASAM Criteria.
  • Judgment: Uses good clinical judgment in resolving medical issues related to opioid treatment and medication.
  • Communication: Able to express ideas concisely and logically to ensure patient management, care, coordination, and safety.
