Physician Assistant - Hybrid Neurosurgery

About the Role

We are seeking a highly motivated, adaptable, and experienced Advanced Practice Provider (APP) to join our busy and dynamic Neurosurgery practice. The ideal candidate will have a strong clinical foundation, excellent communication skills, and a passion for providing exceptional patient care. The APP will work collaboratively with our team of neurosurgeons, nurses, and other healthcare professionals to provide comprehensive care to patients with a wide range of neurological conditions.

This role is an integral part of the care delivery system, prioritizing customer care to foster a healing environment. The incumbent provides specialty and critical care healthcare services within their Physician Assistant scope of practice, managing medical and/or procedural problems for specific populations across various settings such as physician offices, non-acute facilities, and inpatient environments.

Travel is required between Allegheny General Hospital, St. Clair Hospital, Canonsburg Hospital, Washington Hospital, and multiple office locations to cover inpatient hospital consults, operating room cases, and clinics. Weekday and weekend call is required on a rotating basis with the other APP team members.

Responsibilities

• Facilitates effective diagnostic and emergency care for patients in both outpatient and acute inpatient settings (20%).
• Proactively orders and interprets a comprehensive array of laboratory, advanced radiological, and specialized diagnostic studies to inform patient management.
• Independently institutes immediate emergency measures and stabilization techniques for acute patient situations, ensuring rapid communication with the attending physician or covering provider regarding significant patient status changes or critical findings.
• Prepares and electronically prescribes a full range of medications, safely administers medications and injections, performs minor bedside surgical procedures, and executes complex specialty-specific procedures (10%).
• Actively coordinates complex care needs with patients, families, external community services, and the entire interdisciplinary team, initiating timely consultations with the attending physician for cases exceeding PA-C scope (10%).
• Provides specialized care for patients in critical care and inpatient settings, ensuring all medical record documentation is accurate, complete, and timely (10%).
• Educates patients and their families on health and illness prevention, medication, and treatment instructions, and recommends community resources as needed. Conducts daily inpatient hospital rounds, documents patient progress, and triages patient calls (10%).
• Institutes emergency measures, stabilizes acute patient situations, performs hospital rounds, and communicates significant patient changes to the attending physician promptly (10%).
• Engages in mandatory professional continuing education, participates in quality improvement initiatives, and ensures ongoing compliance with medical staff and organizational standards (10%).
• Performs specialized procedures such as assisting in surgical procedures, interventional radiology, or fluoroscopic procedures under supervision, and contributes to the education of trainees and professional staff (10%).
• Performs all other duties as assigned or required, including specialty-specific procedures and expectations as stated with privileging and job agreement (10%).

Requirements

• Master's degree in Physician Assistant Studies.
• Current PA Physician Assistant License.
• PA-C or board eligible.
• Four to ten years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Ongoing successful recertification (NCCPA) as a PA-C.
• Drug Enforcement Agency Licensure (within 60 days of hire).
• CPR - American Heart Association certification.
• Act 33 Child Abuse Clearance Certificate, Act 34 Criminal Background Clearance Certificate, and Act 73 FBI Fingerprinting Criminal Background Clearance Certificate.

Preferred Qualifications

• 1 year of experience in Physician Assistant in a specialty or procedure-based setting.

This position requires individuals who are self-motivated, possess a passion for patient care, and have a high attention to detail while working in a fast-paced, high-pressure environment. The role may require rotational coverage, including evenings, weekends, holidays, and on-call duties, sometimes within a 24/7 coverage model.
