Job Overview

The Physician Assistant will function as a surgical first assist within a high-acuity cardiac surgery program, participating in a wide range of complex cardiac procedures.

Responsibilities

  • Assists the physician staff in the provision of medical services to patients.
  • Manages a broad spectrum of patients and performs a wide range of clinical, diagnostic, and therapeutic procedures.
  • Absorbs responsibility to coordinate treatment plans, monitor progress, and refer patients as necessary to appropriate sources for care under the direction of the supervising physician.
  • Communicates professionally with patient/family, other practitioners, physicians, and co-workers.
  • Develops an effective, comprehensive plan of care individualized to the age and needs of each patient using established standards of care, knowledge of disease entities, and human growth and development and emotional, social, and spiritual needs.
  • Maintains accurate patient records, charts, and documentation for administrative purposes.
  • Encourages preventative medicine through patient education and counseling.
  • Recognizes patient and family teaching as an integral part of the role and follows through on teaching that has been initiated with appropriate documentation.
  • Interprets patient needs to other clinical personnel participating in the care through direct communication and input into care plans.
  • Works collaboratively with physician to manage care of patients in a cost-effective manner.
  • Utilizes appropriate resources across the system including nursing interventions.
  • Utilizes organizational skills to complete assigned work effectively and on time.
  • Orients and trains new Physician Assistants, coordinates staff schedules, assists with performance evaluations, and provides guidance on effective team building.
  • Participates in rounds with residents, completes daily patient management assignments, and assists with patient care and disposition.
  • Handles medical emergencies during regular working hours on the inpatient service.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree.
  • Successful completion of a Physician’s Assistant program.
  • Physician’s Assistance Licensure within the first three months following the receipt of a complete application for medical staff membership and privilege.
  • Physician’s Assistant Certification.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
