The Department of Surgery values Advanced Practice Clinicians (APCs) in both inpatient and ambulatory practice.

The Division of General Surgery, Surgical ICU is seeking a patient-focused, self-motivated Physician Assistant or Nurse Practitioner who thrives in a collaborative team environment. APCs are integral members of our teams, working alongside physicians and independently. This role offers ongoing education through weekly Grand Rounds, evidence-based practice standards, and opportunities for research and quality improvement projects.

About the role

The APC in the Division of General Surgery, Surgical Intensive Care Unit provides care to critically ill patients, primarily post-operative or trauma patients, in a 12-bed ICU. This role involves working alongside residents, medical students, APC students, fellows, and faculty attending physicians. This position is Category I: Mandatory on-campus or at health care facilities.

Responsibilities

  • Provide bedside care to critically ill patients in a 12-bed Surgical ICU.
  • Perform procedures based on need, training, and proficiency.
  • Participate in team meetings, education conferences, and the creation of SICU APC and Resident call schedules.
  • Engage in research and quality improvement projects.
  • Collaborate with multiple team members to ensure optimal patient outcomes.

Work Environment

  • Nearly Continuously: Office environment, hearing, listening, talking.
  • Often: Exposure to infectious disease, oils, hazards (e.g., moving mechanical parts, electrical current, chemicals), repetitive hand motion, walking, standing, sitting.
  • Seldom: Bending, reaching overhead.

Requirements

  • Current licensure to practice as a Physician Assistant in the State of Utah.
  • Current RQI Healthcare Provider eCredential (to be obtained within 30 days of hire).
  • Certification in ACLS, BLS, NRP, or ATLS may be required by the department or privileging criteria.
  • This position is patient-sensitive and requires immunization according to CDC standards and hospital policy.

Preferences

  • Critical care experience preferred but not required.
  • Inpatient experience preferred.

Pay

$101,650 - $135,000 per year.

Schedule

  • Full-time, benefited position.
  • 45-50 hours per week (clinical and nonclinical duties).
  • 13 shifts per month (approximately 13-hour days with sign-outs), including a minimum of 5 night shifts per month.
