Physical Therapy Assistant

Position Overview

The Physical Therapist Assistant (PTA), in conjunction with direction from the Physical Therapist and Physician Orders, evaluates, plans and administers comprehensive physical therapy modalities/regimens to patients in their place of residence for the purpose of developing and restoring function through rehabilitative physical therapy as prescribed by a physician.

Essential Job Functions

• Performs accurate and comprehensive documentation.
• Receives physician orders from physical therapist for certification and recertification of home physical therapy services.
• Ensures that changes in patient condition are communicated to other healthcare team members and staff in a timely, accurate, and thorough manner.
• Collaborates with the physical therapist, patient and family/caregivers, other healthcare team members and staff to facilitate optimal patient outcomes.
• Educates patients, their families/caregivers and other staff as appropriate, in appropriate physical therapy interventions.
• Provides, physical therapy modalities based upon an ongoing assessment/reassessment of the patient’s clinical status by the physical therapist, in accordance with physician orders and in accordance with the standard of care for patient’s age.
• Affirms the need for durable medical equipment as well as other adaptive equipment needs.
• Provides physical therapy interventions in an environment that optimizes patient safety and reduces the likelihood of medical/health care errors.
• Identifies risk of injuries or threats to life and health in the patient’s environment, i.e., environmental/safety/mobility risks and implements appropriate interventions to reduce those risks.
• Completes and submits necessary documentation and verification of completed visits.

Basic Qualifications

• Associate Degree in Physical Therapist Assistant (PTA) from a program approved by an accredited organization.
• Licensed to practice as Physical Therapist Assistant (PTA) within the state, if applicable.
• One (1) year or more experience as a Physical Therapist Assistant (PTA).
• Good verbal, written communication and organization skills.
• Possesses current CPR certification.
• Must be a licensed driver with an automobile that is insured in accordance with state/or organization requirements and is in good working order.

Preferred Qualifications

• Two (2) years or more experience as a Physical Therapist Assistant (PTA).
• One (1) year or more experience as a Physical Therapist Assistant (PTA) in a home health community.

Physical Requirements

• Typical functions of this role include standing, sitting and walking a majority of the time.
• There are occasions when kneeling, stooping, bending or reaching may be necessary.
• The employee must be able to lift and/or move up to 10 lbs. on a regular basis.
• There may be occasions in which the employee must be able to lift or move up to 40 lbs.
• Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.
