About the role

The Phlebotomy Student will learn how to accurately and compassionately collect patient specimens for laboratory diagnostic testing while working in a professional medical environment. They will become skilled at performing venipuncture, capillary sticks, and other basic phlebotomy skills before advancing into a Phlebotomist I position within Intermountain Health.

Responsibilities

  • Attend a four-week course including two weeks in the classroom and two weeks in an externship.
  • Demonstrate knowledge and skills necessary to provide appropriate care for all age groups during the externship.
  • Complete a minimum of 125 venipunctures, 10 capillary sticks, and four blood culture collections before certification.
  • Perform specimen collection using various techniques such as venipuncture, capillary puncture, PIVO, and throat swab collections.
  • Navigate multiple computer systems and work well as a member of a team.
  • Maintain a clean and standardized work environment.
  • Manage stressful situations in a professional manner.

Requirements

  • Flexibility to work a variety of shifts that may include weekends, holidays, and nights.
  • BLS certification.
  • Ability to interact with patients, patients' families, and other caregivers.
  • Operate computers and complex lab equipment with precision and accuracy.
  • See and read lab equipment, labels, monitors, and documents.
  • Walk while transporting phlebotomy equipment cart.
  • Stand for long periods of time to perform work.
  • Adjust body, including bending, to perform phlebotomy work.

Qualifications

Benefits

Intermountain Healthcare will cover the cost of tuition and training materials, and pay a salary of $17.32/hr. while students are in training. Course time counts toward benefits eligibility. (Current Benefits Eligible Intermountain Employees will retain their benefits coverage).

Pay

$17.32 - $17.32/hr.

Schedule

Full-time commitment (40 hours per week) during the training program. Schedules will be set before the course begins and do not allow for flexibility or part-time participation. Students will not be permitted to miss any classes or externship hours.

Location

Employee Service Center, 5245 South College Drive, Murray, Utah.
