Job Duties
- Phlebotomists are responsible for collection and procurement of blood and human specimens in the clinical setting.
- This role is an important component of patient experience, and the individual is expected to collaborate with clinical counterparts to provide a safe environment that promotes the best possible outcomes.
- Performs venipunctures and skin punctures to obtain blood specimens according to the Clinical laboratory Standards Institute guidelines.
- Demonstrates expertise in patient identification, specimen collection, labeling, accessioning, and processing.
- Exhibit strong problem solving skills.
- Understands the criteria for specimen acceptability and rejection.
- Functions effectively in a team environment.
- Works under the leadership of Phlebotomist III, Preanalytical Specialist, Team Lead, Supervisor, or other Laboratory Leader and escalates issues accordingly.
- Possess critical thinking skills to adjust to changing work conditions.
- Carrries out responsibilities in an independent and accountable manner in all assigned care areas.
- Functions as an autonomous end user of relevant Geisinger business applications and tools.
- Performs collection of specimens in the Acute, Post-acute, Clinic and Field Service areas as needed.
- Mentors students and new employees.
Position Details
- Supports Geisinger’s mission of providing exceptional patient care through innovative, efficient, and high-quality laboratory services.
- Collects samples to be analyzed by our state-of-the-art labs.
- Responsible for venipunctures/skin punctures on patients in our inpatient setting.
- Completes a variety of tasks such as troubleshooting physician orders, processing specimens for testing, and aiding our patients.
- Utilizes various skill levels in our labs, from new to experienced phlebotomists, and all skill levels are well utilized.
- Phlebotomist I, II and III qualifications will be considered at appropriate compensation.
- Salary commensurate with experience.
- Experience as a nursing assistant (NA), certified nursing assistant (CNA), medical assistant (MA), certified medical assistant (CMA) or similar will be considered!
- Military experience will be considered. US Army 68W Combat Medic, 18D, US Navy Hospital Corpsman, and related medical specialties.
