Responsibilities

  • Perform venipunctures and skin punctures to obtain blood specimens according to Clinical Laboratory Standards Institute guidelines.
  • Demonstrate competency in patient identification, specimen collection, labeling, accessioning, and processing.
  • Exhibit strong problem-solving skills and understand criteria for specimen acceptability and rejection.
  • Function effectively in a team environment under the leadership of senior phlebotomy staff.
  • Possess critical thinking skills to adjust to changing work conditions and carry out responsibilities independently.
  • Follow supplemental safety protocols at non-Geisinger facilities and function as an autonomous end user of relevant Geisinger business applications.
  • Carry the mobile phlebotomy toolkit (ability to lift/carry 15 pounds).
  • Perform specimen collection in Acute, Post-acute, Clinic, and Field Service areas as needed.
  • Mentor students and new employees and align conduct with Geisinger core values and competencies.
  • Manage inventory as directed by site or regional lead.
  • Complete initial and annual competency assessments via the Learning Management System, including exams and direct observation checklists.
  • Foster a collaborative approach to patient care with effective communication, interpersonal skills, and sound judgment.
  • Assist with continuous improvement objectives, including root cause analyses and investigative processes.
  • Maintain a valid driver’s license and clean driving record; subject to annual driver record checks.
  • Adhere to GSS fleet maintenance policy and vehicle preventative maintenance schedules.
  • Perform accessioning procedures accurately to ensure positive specimen identification and resolve discrepancies.
  • Evaluate specimen suitability and acceptability, resolving or referring problems as appropriate.
  • Perform testing, record Point of Care instrument maintenance, troubleshooting, and quality control as assigned.
  • Handle and replenish reagents and supplies according to established protocols.
  • Follow established reporting procedures and record/report problems and solutions.
  • Navigate and access multiple computer applications as needed and abide by related policies and procedures, including compliance policies.
  • Provide phlebotomy coverage for Medical Group offices, skilled nursing facilities, or perform in-home phlebotomy for homebound patients.
  • Explain the blood drawing process to patients with a comforting attitude.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or Equivalent (GED) (Required).
  • Related work experience (Required).
  • Valid Driver’s License.
  • Certified Phlebotomy Technician (ASCP) certification preferred for advanced roles.

Qualifications

  • Phlebotomist I: Less than 1 year of experience.
  • Phlebotomist II: 1-2 years of experience or graduation from Geisinger's School of Phlebotomy Program.
  • Phlebotomist III: Qualifications of Phlebotomist II, ASCP Certification, and completion of an internal preceptor course.
  • Experience as a nursing assistant (NA), certified nursing assistant (CNA), medical assistant (MA), certified medical assistant (CMA), or similar roles will be considered.
  • Military experience (e.g., US Army 68W Combat Medic, 18D, US Navy Hospital Corpsman, and related medical specialties) will be considered.

Pay

Salary commensurate with experience. This position qualifies for a $5,000 sign-on bonus for eligible candidates.
