Responsibilities
- Perform venipunctures and skin punctures to obtain blood specimens according to Clinical Laboratory Standards Institute guidelines.
- Demonstrate competency in patient identification, specimen collection, labeling, accessioning, and processing.
- Exhibit strong problem-solving skills and understand criteria for specimen acceptability and rejection.
- Function effectively in a team environment under the leadership of senior phlebotomists, supervisors, or other laboratory leaders.
- Possess critical thinking skills to adjust to changing work conditions and carry out responsibilities independently.
- Follow supplemental safety protocols at non-Geisinger facilities and function as an autonomous end user of relevant Geisinger business applications.
- Carry a mobile phlebotomy toolkit (ability to lift/carry 15 pounds).
- Perform specimen collection in Acute, Post-acute, Clinic, and Field Service areas as needed.
- Mentor students and new employees.
- Conduct inventory management as directed by site or regional lead.
- Complete initial and annual competency assessments via the Learning Management System, including exams and direct observation checklists.
- Foster a collaborative approach to patient care with effective communication, interpersonal skills, and sound judgment.
- Assist with continuous improvement objectives, including root cause analyses and investigative processes.
- Maintain a valid driver’s license and clean driving record; adhere to annual driver record checks and fleet maintenance policies.
Requirements
- High School Diploma or Equivalent (GED) (Required).
- Related work experience (Required).
- Valid Driver’s License.
- Certified Phlebotomy Technician (ASCP) certification (preferred for advanced roles).
Experience as a nursing assistant (NA), certified nursing assistant (CNA), medical assistant (MA), certified medical assistant (CMA), or similar will be considered. Military experience (e.g., US Army 68W Combat Medic, 18D, US Navy Hospital Corpsman) is also valued.
Qualifications by Level
- Phlebotomist I: Less than 1 year of experience.
- Phlebotomist II: 1-2 years of experience or graduation from Geisinger’s School of Phlebotomy Program.
- Phlebotomist III: Qualifications of Phlebotomist II, ASCP Certification, and completion of an internal preceptor course.

Pay
Salary commensurate with experience. This position qualifies for a $7500 sign-on bonus for eligible candidates.

Full-time, 12-hour day shifts at Geisinger Medical Center (GMC).
