About the role
Responsible for performing all phlebotomy procedures in a timely manner according to physician’s orders in the patient’s chart or per prescription on outpatients. As a member of the care team, the phlebotomist works collaboratively with other members to ensure the safe and accurate delivery of patient care. Under the direction of the Laboratory, assumes responsibility for patient specimen testing, quality control, quality improvement, and equipment maintenance.
Responsibilities
Pre-Analytical
- Uses EHR to print patient requisitions
- Performs routine venipuncture or capillary puncture using proper procedure and technique (refer to Specimen Collection and Handling Procedure)
- Follows correct procedure for patient identification and labeling specimens (refer to Patient Identification and Specimen Labeling Policy)
- Correctly labels and centrifuges specimens
- Maintains an organized, clean work environment
Analytical
- Performs CoaguCheck testing according to established procedure
- Accurately records INR results on the requisition
Post-Analytical
- Uses the EHR to look up and print patient reports
- Sorts and charts patient reports
- Logs and files reference lab reports
- Performs lab billing
General
- Complies with the following policies: Incident Management Plan, Device-Related Adverse Events, Hazard Communication Program, Exposure Control Program, Fire and Electrical Safety
- Maintains patient confidentiality
- Maintains and cleans phlebotomy area and ensures it is well-stocked
Requirements
- High School diploma or equivalent required
- MA certification preferred
- BLS certification required within the first 30 days of employment
- Basic EKG skills required within 6 months of employment
- Certification is to be renewed by recommended renewal date on certification card
- Minimum 2 years phlebotomy experience required
- Knowledge of EHR and ability to navigate EHR preferred
