Phlebotomist/Lab Assistant (Weekends only)

Part-Time, weekends only (nights).

About the Role

Perform basic phlebotomy and laboratory assistant duties, including blood collection from patients of all ages, collection of body fluid specimens (e.g., urine) and cultures, and other departmental functions under the supervision of a medical technologist.

Responsibilities

• Accurately identify and obtain blood specimens from inpatients, outpatients, employees, and others as requested by authorized personnel using correct techniques and equipment.
• Verify accuracy of computer-generated orders and resolve discrepancies prior to drawing patients.
• Ensure specimen integrity by adhering to appropriate laboratory collection protocols (e.g., checking for IVs, fistulas).
• Initial, date, and record time of collection on all laboratory requisition forms or specimens.
• Assist with retrieving blood from tube stations, central collecting in the computer system, and stocking phlebotomy supplies.
• Monitor daily phlebotomy actions using various computer programs and logs (e.g., Collection Inquiry, Phlebotomy Dispatch Log, will call board).
• Maintain phlebotomy areas and carts in a neat, clean, and well-stocked condition.
• Collect timed specimens within 30 minutes of the requested time and stat specimens within 15 minutes.
• Communicate effectively with hospital personnel regarding collection of timed, stat, or unobtainable specimens.
• Carry and actively use Vocera, a surgery phone, and a star 3 pager.
• Follow guidelines for sending specimens through the pneumatic tube station to meet turn-around time requirements.
• Maintain specimen tracking by correctly logging all inpatient and floor samples with the correct collection time.
• Evaluate and clear pending logs to ensure all patient samples are accounted for.
• Participate in the orientation and/or training of personnel as directed.
• Maintain productivity comparable to other experienced staff (6-8 patients per hour).
• Perform non-technical procedures and other tasks as determined by leadership to maintain departmental functions.
• Contribute to effective customer relations by assisting patients, visitors, and physicians, and demonstrating a welcoming attitude.
• Perform other related work as required or requested.

Requirements

• High school graduate or equivalent required.
• ASCP Phlebotomy Certification or equivalent preferred.
• Phlebotomy experience preferred.
• Manual dexterity is essential.
• Ability to accurately follow directions and perform specific functions.
• Effective communication skills with patients, outpatients, hospital staff, and lab staff.
• Knowledge of proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE).
• Moderate physical effort; may be exposed to potentially infectious diseases.

Pay

USD $17.14/Hr. – Max USD $26.56/Hr.
