Responsibilities

  • Accurately and efficiently performs specimen collections and testing as per laboratory policies and procedures.
  • Utilizes multiple computer systems to track and receive orders, ensuring accuracy and timely completion.
  • Assesses the environment for patient safety, selecting appropriate equipment for each patient's needs.
  • Maintains chain of custody for forensic collections and updates HRP and pending log lists.
  • Organizes work flow to enhance efficiency, answering phones, faxes, and reports.
  • Maintains a clean and safe work environment.
  • May drive to offsite locations for specimen collections.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Holds a High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Preferred: Recognized National Certification (e.g., ASPT, ASCP).
  • Precise hand-eye coordination and finger dexterity.
  • Ability to operate multiple computer systems.
  • Knowledge of specimen requirements for over 2000 tests, including timing and anatomy for correct collections.
  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Self-directed and able to exercise independent judgment.
  • Works well in a team environment.

Physical Requirements

  • Standing on feet 65% of shift.
  • Sitting up to 4 hours/day on a chair while doing paperwork.
  • Walking up to 50 yards per day.
  • Lifting: 1-10 lbs from floor to counter level, PRN to replace reagents.
  • Carrying: 1-10 lbs distance
  • Pushing: 1-5 < 50 yards several times a day.
  • Squatting: several times a day to reach cabinets, equipment.
  • Twisting: Upper body 45 degrees; frequency – 10 times/ day.
  • Rotating: Upper body 45 degrees; frequency – 10 times/ day.
  • Reaching: arms distance 1-3 feet several times a day.

OSHA Exposure Level

Category I - Exposure to infectious diseases, blood and body fluids.

Threshold Requirements

  • Annual Joint Commission mandatory education requirements.
  • In-service and health requirements including attendance at new employee orientation, TB/PPD Surveillance Program.
  • Maintenance of required professional licensing and/or certification(s).
