Phlebotomist, Full Time Days, Pre-Admission Test/ Screening, Summit, NJ
About the role
Supports completion of outpatient testing by performing venipuncture, electrocardiogram (EKG), mid-turbinate swabs, and collecting additional laboratory testing as ordered by the provider. Assists with rooming patients for appointments with physician and anesthesia team as needed and performs vital signs.
Responsibilities
- Performs venipuncture in a safe environment, following Atlantic Health System Policy including positive patient identification using the Two-Identifier System.
- Enters Computerized Laboratory Order Entry in Softlab as ordered by the provider.
- Releases Epic orders and Softlab orders.
- Transcribes orders as needed into Epic system from paper forms.
- Performs correct test as ordered by the provider.
- Uses laboratory references to ensure correct testing codes and correct collection tubes/containers are utilized.
- Contacts provider for prescription or order clarification as needed.
- Maintains asepsis and disposes of sharps properly.
- Performs electrocardiogram (EKG) as ordered by provider following Atlantic Health System Policy including positive patient identification using the Two-Identifier System.
- Releases EKG order in Epic a time of performing the test.
- If EKG order needs to be entered into Epic, transcribes order into Epic from paper order.
- Assist with rooming patients for physician appointments and anesthesia provider appointments.
- Performs vital signs including, temperature, pulse, blood pressure, oxygen saturation, height and weight.
- Communicates vital sign recordings with RN or provider.
- Keeps clean, well-stocked, and organized workstation.
- Replenishes supplies as needed.
- Notifies team if stock supplies are low for prompt reordering.
- Performs other departmental duties as assigned (i.e., eyewash log, refrigerator log, nutrition ordering, ERAS bags, etc.).
- Adheres to OSHA, JCAHO national patient safety goals, Board of Health, and hospital standards and requirements.
- Participates in yearly validations of department skills.
- Maintains clean and safe environment for patients and staff in accordance with hospital policies and other regulatory agencies.
- Checks for patient identification prior to any intervention.
- Exhibits PRIDE values on a daily basis.
- Completes collection of mid-turbinate Swabs for COVID or MRSA testing.
- Confirms surgical date for pre-procedural COVID testing to ensure completion within the required timeframe per Atlantic Health System policy.
- Observes and maintains proper personal protective equipment in accordance with infection prevention policies when providing patient care.
- Maintains standard precautions on all patients.
- Washes hands before and after caring for each patient.
- Assists with clerical functions as needed per department (i.e., scanning documents into Epic and patient phone calls).
Qualifications
- High School Graduate or GED equivalent required.
- Ability to read, write and speak English.
- 1-2 years phlebotomy, secretary-technician or patient care technician experience preferred.
- Certified Phlebotomy Technician Preferred.
- AHA BLS required.
