Phlebotomist - Full time - Days
Position Summary
Under the leadership of the department Director, Oncology, the Phlebotomist/Medical Assistant is an active member of the Oncology team that collects data and provides comfort measures and care to patients. The Phlebotomist/Medical Assistant is responsible for the collection of blood samples from patients by venipuncture or micro techniques and facilitates transportation of the laboratory specimens. The Phlebotomist/Medical Assistant is responsible for providing care that is appropriate for the patient’s developmental age and is culturally sensitive. The Phlebotomist/Medical Assistant formulates an appropriate plan for care and analyzes the effectiveness of interventions while effectively interacting with patients, families, and other medical office staff members. The Phlebotomist/Medical Assistant maintains standards of professional nursing.
Basic Qualifications
- Education: Requires a high school diploma with an emphasis in Office Occupations and Administrative Skills or a GED state certification. Graduation from a Phlebotomy or Medical Assistant program is preferred.
- Experience: Requires up to one year of work-related on-the-job experience or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
- Licensure, Registrations & Certifications: A Medical Assistant or Phlebotomy certification preferred. Requires a current certification in Basic Life Saving (BLS).
Essential Job Responsibilities
- Functions as part of an interdisciplinary team with positive interpersonal communication skills when communicating with patients, families, and the medical office staff.
- Counsels patients on relevant health risks, nutritional issues, and corresponding lifestyle changes that are warranted.
- Communicates with patients about medications and medical tests and assists with their scheduling.
- Notifies patients of test results as directed and any follow-up visits requested by the physician.
- Reviews and discusses patient care plans and education plans with patients and family members and assesses the patient or family’s ability to comprehend.
- Maintains examination rooms stocked with supplies and reorders supplies as necessary.
- Remains current on innovations, developments, new procedures, and techniques in nursing care to provide quality nursing care services.
- Assumes responsibility for safety, infection control, and performance improvement as part of CRHS’s efforts to provide quality care and services.
- Presents a professional image to CRHS’s medical staff, co-workers, physicians, patients, and family members.
- Attends professional development programs and in-service trainings and meets the minimum requirement for continuing professional education.
- Performs other related job duties as assigned.
