Phlebotomist - Full-time - Days

Work Shift/Schedule: 12 Hr Morning - Evening

About the Role

Performs the duties of a Phlebotomist I plus added responsibilities designated by the Section Supervisor. The Phlebotomist II must maintain sufficient clinical expertise to function as an assistant to the Laboratory Section Supervisor and perform those duties in the Section Supervisor’s absence. Displays initiative, excellent verbal and written communication skills, and is proactive in handling day-to-day responsibilities and problem resolution. Works closely with Lab Section Supervisor, Lab Administration, Pathologists, and is well-respected by peers and co-workers. Cares for patients across all age groups: neonate, infant, child, adolescent, adult, and geriatric. Performs clinical duties in accordance with population-specific guidelines and adheres to National Patient Safety Goals.

Requirements

• High School Diploma or GED
• Successful completion of a certificate in phlebotomy through an approved certification organization: ASCP, National Phlebotomy Association, American Medical Technologist, National Performance Specialist, National Healthcareer Association
• 3 years of phlebotomy experience including pediatric, geriatric, and capillary collections

Responsibilities

• Performs phlebotomy techniques professionally and presents the lab positively to the public
• Correctly performs routine venipuncture and micro-collection/special collection techniques
• Adapts phlebotomy techniques according to patient condition
• Follows all safety guidelines for patient and personal safety
• Coordinates special collections with other departments
• Delivers clinical specimens efficiently to the laboratory
• Performs effectively in complex emergency situations (e.g., multiple trauma or disaster)
• Prepossesses clinical specimens for analytical testing and ensures specimen validity/integrity
• Operates a centrifuge properly and understands specimen requirements
• Understands tests performed in various lab departments
• Resolves specimen-related problems with other departments positively
• Familiar with specialty tests sent to reference laboratories and laboratory reference accounts
• Performs customer service functions for reference accounts (e.g., provides information, routes supplies)
• Accurately performs drug screen collections following chain of custody protocols
• Performs receptionist duties, including answering phones within three rings, maintaining communications, and assisting visitors
• Accessions outpatients in a timely manner and provides laboratory patient data/clerical support
• Accurately codes laboratory orders into the laboratory information system with minimal errors
• Commits to continued professional growth through education and annual competency assessments
• Assists in training new employees or students by demonstrating techniques and providing guidance
• Functions as a preceptor for students or new staff, directing clinical training to enhance learning
• Contributes to quality and productivity management in the department
• Demonstrates autonomy in problem identification and resolution
• Reports problems as opportunities for improvement and identifies remedial actions
• Prioritizes work to meet turnaround requirements set by Laboratory Administration
• Adapts to a changing workplace to meet patient care needs and prioritizes work for internal/external customers
• Provides at least one documented suggestion for quality improvement in the Laboratory
