About the role

The Phlebotomist prepares specimens for laboratory testing and performs screening standards, drawing quality blood samples while creating an atmosphere of trust and confidence.

Responsibilities

  • Perform blood draws, label specimens, centrifuge specimens, record maintenance data, and handle decontamination.
  • Update patient information and greet customers courteously.
  • Collect specimens according to established procedures, explaining the venipuncture or specimen collection process clearly to patients.
  • Reduce patient anxiety by maintaining a calm environment before, during, and after collection.
  • Demonstrate techniques using straight needles and/or butterfly needles.
  • Match laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes; label, centrifuge, split, and freeze specimens as required.
  • Ensure 100% accuracy by verifying test requisitions or computer labels against physician orders.
  • Package specimens for transport, following protocols to maintain specimen integrity.
  • Store specimens at required temperatures and place them in appropriate containers.
  • Demonstrate proficiency in proper collection methods and processing of all specimens.
  • Comply with OSHA and DEP regulations.
  • Attend annual department trainings.
  • Answer telephone calls and read laboratory results to address inquiries.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Valid Phlebotomy certification for the state of employment (required in CA, LA, NV, and WA).
  • Minimum of 6 months' work experience performing venipunctures in a fast-paced lab or hospital setting.
  • Reliable transportation with at least 4 years of licensed driving experience and a valid driver's license.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Willingness to travel 100% of the time throughout the assigned geography.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Excellent patient interaction skills, both in person and by phone.
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to work independently.

Physical Demands and Working Conditions

  • Ability to sit or stand for long periods of time.
  • Ability to lift up to 20 pounds.
