Phlebotomist Float
Responsibilities
- Perform blood draws using venipuncture techniques, including both straight needles and butterfly needles, in a safe, accurate, and efficient manner.
- Collect, label, and store blood and other specimens, such as urine or fecal samples, in accordance with established procedures and protocols.
- Clearly and courteously explain venipuncture and other specimen collection procedures to patients, including pediatric patients, to ensure understanding and comfort.
- Match laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes and verify that all information is accurate and complete.
- Label, centrifuge, split, and freeze specimens as required by specific test orders, following all procedural guidelines.
- Check all test requisitions or computer-generated labels against the written orders or scripts to ensure 100% accuracy.
- Package specimens for transport and follow defined procedures to maintain specimen integrity, including correct temperature control and appropriate containers or tubes.
- Record maintenance data, perform decontamination tasks, and support overall cleanliness and safety in the work area.
- Update patient information accurately in the system and ensure records are complete and current.
- Fully understand and interpret physicians’ orders to ensure correct tests and procedures are performed.
- Answer telephone calls professionally, provide laboratory results when appropriate, and respond to inquiries in a timely and accurate manner.
- Attend and complete annual department trainings and remain current with all required updates and procedural changes.
- Understand and comply with OSHA and DEP regulations and all applicable safety standards.
- Float between designated locations as assigned, maintaining consistent quality and service across sites.
- Contribute to workflow improvements by identifying issues, troubleshooting problems, and making recommendations to enhance efficiency and patient care.
Requirements
- Valid phlebotomy certification for the state of employment, where required.
- Minimum of 1 year of active work experience performing venipunctures in a fast-paced laboratory or hospital setting.
- Demonstrated proficiency in phlebotomy, including blood draws and venipuncture.
- Experience performing phlebotomy on pediatric patients.
- Ability to use straight needles and butterfly needles safely and effectively.
- High school diploma or GED.
- 0–2 years of overall related experience, including at least 1 year of active venipuncture experience.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite.
- Strong attention to detail when labeling specimens, matching requisitions, and verifying orders.
- Able to follow detailed procedures for specimen collection, processing, and transport.
- Strong communication skills to clearly explain procedures and respond to patient and provider inquiries.
- Knowledge of OSHA and DEP regulations related to laboratory safety and specimen handling.
Qualifications
- Formal qualification as a phlebotomist.
- Experience working in a fast-paced lab or hospital environment.
- Pediatric phlebotomy experience, including comfort working with children and their caregivers.
- Ability to troubleshoot issues related to specimen collection and workflow.
- Willingness to participate in ongoing training and annual departmental education.
- Comfort working as a float across multiple locations as part of a regional hiring initiative.
Pay and Benefits
The pay range for this position is $23.31 - $23.31/hr.
