About the Role

The Phlebotomist/Courier transports laboratory specimens to and from the clinic site and Singing River Health System in accordance with departmental and System procedures and guidelines. He/She verifies all orders, procedures, and specimens according to current procedures. The Phlebotomist/Courier practices safe driving habits and follows all safety guidelines. He/She contributes to the department’s standard of excellence in providing quality services to patients and clients.

Responsibilities

  • Performs venipunctures, heel and finger sticks, and other specimen collections for clinical laboratory testing.
  • Ensures appropriate specimens are collected from proper patients, including critically ill, trauma, newborn, geriatric, and outpatients in numerous outpatient settings.
  • Provides accurate patient identification, specimen labeling, preservation, transportation, and pre-test processing.
  • Performs clerical duties; processes orders; performs computer functions; files reports; records/sends messages; gives reports to the nurse/doctor; transcribes doctors' orders on outpatients.
  • Works and communicates effectively with a variety of patients.

Qualifications

Education

  • High School graduate or equivalent required.
  • Some college with courses in a health or science-related field preferred.
  • Training in computer, basic office equipment, and medical terminology preferred.

License & Certifications

  • Valid driver's license with a satisfactory driving record (must be maintained).
  • Current Phlebotomy certification from an approved agency preferred (ASCP, APA, AMT, NHA, NCCT, NIHP, MedCA, NPC, AAH, or other accredited certification approved by the Lab Director).
  • De-escalation training completed by the end of position orientation (90 days); must have appropriate level of training.

Experience

  • One (1) year Phlebotomy experience preferred.
  • Equivalent combination of education and/or experience from which comparable knowledge, skills, and abilities have been achieved.

Schedule & Work Environment

  • 8-hour shifts across outpatient draw stations.
  • Starting as early as 6am and ending as late as 5pm.
  • Rotating weekends.
  • Location: Singing River Pascagoula Hospital.
  • Reports to: SRHS Laboratory Director under direct supervision of SRHS Phlebotomy Supervisor or Phlebotomy Team Leader.
  • Supervises: None.

Physical & Mental Demands

  • Moderately active work: sitting with frequent movement about the office and facility, and travel within SRHS service area.
  • Exerts negligible force frequently to lift, carry, push, pull, or move objects, including the human body.
  • Repetitive motions: substantial movements of wrists, hands, and/or fingers while operating standard office equipment (computer keyboard, copier, 10-key).
  • Must perceive sound at normal speaking levels; ability to make fine discriminations in sound.
  • Close visual acuity; ability to shift gaze from computer monitor to forms/printed material for close vision comparison.
  • Must be active for extended periods without undue fatigue; must be able to work flexible hours.
  • Subject to exposure of body fluids, sputum, and tissues, which may carry hazard of infectious disease.
  • Keen mental faculties for data collection and specimen collection.
  • Communication/speaking/enunciation skills to receive and provide information in person and by telephone.
  • Emotional stability conducive to dealing with high stress levels.
  • Ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines.

Special Demands

  • Proficient knowledge and ability to use a computer (keyboard proficient) and other office technology (telephone, fax, etc.).
  • Intermediate knowledge of MS Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
  • Ability to function independently and as a team; adaptability to workload demands.
  • Understanding that an error may have serious consequences for patients.
  • Valid driver's license required for travel throughout SRHS service area.
