About the role

This is a part-time position combining clerical and phlebotomy duties. The role supports both the hospital laboratory and outpatient services, ensuring efficient operations and high-quality patient care.

Responsibilities

• Demonstrate professional etiquette, addressing incoming mail, telephone calls, inquiries, or requests accurately and timely.
• Use computer skills to facilitate daily work duties, including applicable software applications, scanning documents, and running reports.
• Maintain and devise office systems, filing systems, and data management for efficient unit functioning.
• Perform phlebotomy functions (venipuncture, fingerstick, heelstick) according to established procedures with minimal patient discomfort.
• Verify patient information for accuracy and perform order entry with no errors.
• Generate collection lists, add or cancel tests, and properly label specimen tubes.
• Identify patients correctly by checking name, hospital medical record number, or date of birth on patient armband or registration face sheet.
• Use handheld devices to scan wristbands, print labels, and scan labeled specimens at the patient's chairside/bedside.
• Determine priority of STAT draws and ensure timely transport of all patient specimens to the lab.
• Organize assigned work, prioritize STAT requests, and complete workload accurately.
• Assist in training new employees and student interns in phlebotomy duties and departmental procedures.
• Attend required safety training programs and maintain knowledge of techniques, procedures, and correct use of protective barrier equipment.
• Ensure a safe environment by following hospital exposure control plans for bloodborne and airborne pathogens.
• Demonstrate respect and regard for the dignity of all patients, families, visitors, and fellow employees.
• Participate in staff meetings, lean process improvement, and daily team huddles.
• Assist with accessioning, pneumatic tube system, answering phones, processing send-outs, and entering miscellaneous lab orders.
• Act as a receptionist in the outpatient lab, greet patients, answer phones, and contribute positively to patient satisfaction scores.
• Maintain cleanliness and organization of work areas, phlebotomy trays/carts, and storage rooms.
• Respond to and document appropriately in the electronic temperature monitoring system.
• Communicate supply needs and maintain stock in the phlebotomy room.

Requirements

• One year of experience in a secretarial, doctor’s office, or healthcare setting.
• Ability to communicate effectively and document information accurately.
• Knowledge of basic medical terminology and basic computer skills.
• Customer service orientation.
• High school education or equivalent preferred.
• One year of full-time experience preferred.
• Certified or certification-eligible with the National Phlebotomy Association preferred.
• Successful completion of a phlebotomy training program and internship, or equivalent experience.

Working Conditions

• Stand/Walk: 6-8 hours.
• Sit: 1-2 hours.
• Bend, squat, climb, reach, lift, carry, push, and pull: up to 1/3 of the time.
• Precise motor function required for both hands and gross motor function for both feet.
• Lifting up to 25 pounds: 1/3 or more of the time.
• Exposure to body fluids.
