Responsibilities

  • Perform efficient and effective plasma collection from donors through venipuncture, monitoring the pheresis process, and adhering to Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
  • Execute all aspects of the pheresis procedure and plasma collection, including donor set-up, monitoring, and disconnect, in compliance with SOPs.
  • Conduct venipuncture on donors to initiate the pheresis process, following SOPs and FDA guidelines.
  • Evaluate donor vein performance to identify and correct potential issues, ensuring product quality, donor safety, and expedited donation times.
  • Optimize the donation process for efficiency and donor experience, making adjustments as needed.
  • Educate new donors on therapeutic products derived from plasma, the screening process, health tests, appointment systems, donation fees, center policies, nutrition, and other relevant information.
  • Address donor questions promptly, accurately, and professionally.
  • Maintain vigilance for donor reactions, providing assistance or notifying appropriate staff when necessary.
  • Record incidents during the pheresis process using a Personal Digital Assistant (PDA), including machine alerts, alarms, volume variances, and donor adverse events.
  • Perform equipment calibrations and verify maintenance as outlined in SOPs.
  • Respond to and resolve complex equipment alarms or donor issues, troubleshoot equipment failures, and document incidents.
  • Remove or replace faulty equipment from service as needed.
  • Monitor donor flow to ensure continuous turnover and alert supervisors of any issues.
  • Collect arm or whole blood samples from donors for testing.
  • Accurately record donor data in the electronic donor information management system, following SOPs.
  • Understand and follow policies and procedures related to hyper-immune programs at the center, if applicable.
  • Maintain a clean and efficient work environment, ensuring sufficient operating supplies and forms are available.
  • Adhere to all Health Safety & Environmental (HSE) and Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) policies and procedures.
  • Promote safety in all actions and maintain confidentiality of personnel, donor, and center information.
  • May be cross-trained in other areas to meet business needs.
  • Bilingual skills may be required to meet business needs.
  • Perform other job-related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Internal CSL Employees: Must have successfully completed the CSL Plasma DST training.
  • External candidates: Minimum of 6 months’ experience as a phlebotomist; one year of experience is preferred.
  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Minimum of twelve (12) months of experience in a medical or healthcare environment preferred, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • For centers located in California:
    • Persons performing automated plasmapheresis procedures must be state-certified as a Certified Phlebotomy Technician I, OR
    • Currently licensed as a Registered Nurse by the State of California.
  • Different qualifications or responsibilities may apply based on local legal and/or educational requirements.
