About the role

Performs phlebotomy services on inpatients and outpatients, as requested by physicians, in support of the hospital's mission of patient care.

Responsibilities

  • Performs, in a timely manner, blood collection using established laboratory guidelines designed to acquire acceptable specimens used in diagnostic and therapeutic procedures to meet the needs of patients, as requested by the ordering provider.
  • Follows standard operating procedures to perform basic diagnostic procedures to produce accurate results.
  • Operates basic laboratory equipment (e.g., centrifuges, computer system, tube transport system, timers) consistent with standard operating procedures.
  • Restocks, as required, the work area of needed supplies to assist co-workers in the performance of their duties.
  • Maintains effective communication with the laboratory sections, administrative office, coworkers, personnel, patients and other departments as necessary to assure identification of problems and provide problem resolution in support of the hospital's mission of patient care.
  • Answers the telephone in a prompt and courteous manner, identifying self and unit.
  • Participates in various activities (i.e., staff meetings, in-services, health screens, etc.) and keeps current in all communications (e.g., reading circulated material, staff meetings, mailboxes, e-mail and procedures) incorporating new information into routine use.
  • Effectively communicates in a timely manner any unusual supply usage or critical supply level to the supervisor to expedite ordering of required supplies for the continual needs of patients.
  • Contacts nursing staff and/or ordering provider promptly for clarification of unclear or incomplete test requisitions/orders; requesting new requisitions/orders in accordance with established laboratory policies.
  • Notifies patient care units promptly of uncollected patient specimens in order to expedite accurate test results in a timely manner.
  • Communicates all appropriate information to patients and/or the public necessary for their understanding of the procedure before, during and after designated procedure.
  • Performs basic clerical duties to help assure efficient running of the laboratory in support of the hospital's missions.
  • Promptly and accurately completes computer entry of all requested laboratory tests, accepting only patient specimens that are properly labeled and requisitions that are properly completed, in accordance with established laboratory policies.
  • Affords assistance to hospital personnel in obtaining laboratory results and/or referring such personnel to the appropriate area or laboratory.
  • Contacts patient care units promptly for resubmission of improperly labeled specimens and/or improperly completed requisitions, in order to expedite accurate testing in a timely manner.
  • Participates in educational endeavors of the institution to meet the current and future needs of the phlebotomy service, laboratory, hospital, and the university in support of the hospital's mission of patient care, teaching, and research.
  • Participates, as required, in the instruction, supervision, and evaluation of residents and students of the School of Medicine and other healthcare professionals as established by laboratory policies (eg. Laboratory objectives, evaluation forms).
  • Participates, as required, in the training, supervision and evaluation of new employees, as established by laboratory policies (e.g., section training checklist).

Requirements

  • Completion of a phlebotomy education program or an allied health education program that includes phlebotomy education and a minimum of 50 successful unaided venipunctures.
  • Preferred qualifications include certification as a phlebotomist by AMT, NCA, or ASCP, completion of a NAACLS accredited phlebotomy program, or completion of a phlebotomy education program that includes 100 successful unaided blood collections by both venipuncture and capillary collection.
  • Experience in a hospital or clinic setting.
