Job Summary and Qualifications

POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES

• Perform venous blood collection procedures competently with minimal patient discomfort.
• Perform blood culture collection procedures.
• Demonstrate knowledge of color-top tubes, volumes of blood needed, and test requirements.
• Identify patients by matching requisition information with their identification bands before venipuncture.
• Dispose of sharps in a rigid sharp container.
• Follow standard precautions at all times.
• Maintain accuracy in registering patients' samples for appropriate billing.
• Collect and record pertinent insurance information.
• Answer questions and phone calls related to patient results.
• Prioritize STAT, scheduled, and outpatient orders.
• Display courteous and professional behavior towards patients, co-workers, nursing, and medical staff.
• Aid physician offices with all laboratory needs.
• Maintain a clean working area.
• Clean and supply venipuncture trays.
• Periodically required to travel offsite for specimen pickup, phlebotomy, or report delivery.
• Maintain patient/employee confidentiality and privacy.
• Complete assigned duties efficiently and in a timely manner.
• Ensure quality in the department by performing necessary duties.
• Seek guidance and direction when necessary.
• Participate in performance improvement and continuous quality improvement activities.

Qualifications

• Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification (or obtain prior to orientation).
• Basic computer skills.
• Phlebotomy skills preferred.
• Valid driver’s license and clean driving history for offsite travel requirements.
