Job Summary and Qualifications

POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES
- Perform venous blood collection procedures competently with minimal patient discomfort.
- Perform blood culture collection procedures.
- Demonstrate knowledge of color-top tubes, volumes of blood needed, and test requirements.
- Identify patients by matching requisition information with their identification bands before venipuncture.
- Dispose of sharps in a rigid sharp container.
- Follow standard precautions at all times.
- Maintain accuracy in registering patients' samples for appropriate billing.
- Collect and record pertinent insurance information.
- Answer questions and phone calls related to patient results.
- Prioritize STAT, scheduled, and outpatient orders.
- Display courteous and professional behavior towards patients, co-workers, nursing, and medical staff.
- Aid physician offices with all laboratory needs.
- Maintain a clean working area.
- Clean and supply venipuncture trays.
- Periodically required to travel offsite for specimen pickup, phlebotomy, or report delivery.
- Maintain patient/employee confidentiality and privacy.
- Complete assigned duties efficiently and in a timely manner.
- Ensure quality in the department by performing necessary duties.
- Seek guidance and direction when necessary.
- Participate in performance improvement and continuous quality improvement activities.
Qualifications
- Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification (or obtain prior to orientation).
- Basic computer skills.
- Phlebotomy skills preferred.
- Valid driver’s license and clean driving history for offsite travel requirements.
