Phlebotomist

Job Summary

Provides support services to the laboratory technical staff and nursing. Acts as a laboratory information resource to health center staff and clients. Responsible for processing specimens for testing, acquiring patient specimens by capillary and venipuncture, performing waived testing, and various clerical tasks related to specimen processing and patient billing.

Adheres to the TCC Ch'eghwtsen' model of service and guiding principle, emphasizing timely and effective service, trust, respect, compassion, and empathy.

Essential Functions

• Procures specimens appropriate for the requirements of ordered tests.
• Maintains a system providing proper patient preparation and specimen collection, identification, preservation, transportation, and processing.
• Enters patient information and test results into laboratory information system.
• Processes specimens for routine and STAT work using the laboratory information system.
• Participates in the training and orientation of new employees.
• Performs tests of moderate complexity to the extent of training, education, expertise, and technical ability.
• Maintains CPR certification.
• Provides phlebotomy services whenever required, including on-call as needed.
• Responds to internal or external disasters as needed.
• Conducts work in an organized manner, meeting established deadlines.
• Demonstrates knowledge and understanding of developmental stages of patients throughout the continuum of life as they relate to specimen collection and result interpretation.
• Responsible for age-specific knowledge.
• Builds effective, supportive relationships with co-workers and internal/external customers.
• Uses positive interpersonal skills to promote success of team members and promote laboratory and health center goals.
• Speaks courteously when on the telephone.
• Maintains strict confidentiality of patients.

Minimum Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Able to communicate orally and in writing in a tactful manner.
• Able to pass core competencies annually.
• Able to work with constant interruptions and perform multiple tasks.
• 100 successful venipunctures or equivalent experiences.
• Experience with specimen collection/drawing pediatric patients/age-specific.
• Phlebotomy certification or experience preferred.
• Current BLS certification preferred.
• Must be able to pass ICPA background check.

Knowledge, Skills And Abilities

• Knowledge of universal precautions and infection control practices.
• Pertinent knowledge and understanding of Federal, State, and local laws, codes, and regulations regarding health care.
• Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
• Ability to use plan, organize, set priorities, work as a team member, and effectively complete assignments.
• Skill in informatics and processes, and the ability to communicate effectively electronically, orally, and in writing.

Supervision

This position has no supervisory responsibilities.

Physical Demands

• Able to spend ong periods of time sitting or standing.
• Have good color discernment.
• May be exposed to communicable diseases, blood borne pathogens, and hazardous materials.
• May need to lift up to 40 pounds occasionally.
• Traveling from site to site (includes travel in small aircraft), standing, and stooping for extended periods of time.
• Exposure to a variety of working environments, including rural village communities.
