Phlebotomist

Oklahoma Arthritis Center (OAC) is seeking a detail-oriented individual to perform venipuncture and routine laboratory tests to support patient diagnosis and treatment.

Responsibilities

• Perform venipuncture on patients following medical practice protocols for safety, infection control, and confidentiality.
• Verify patient allergies (e.g., latex, tape), name, and insurance information.
• Notify providers and/or nurses immediately about “red flag” laboratory results.
• Ensure quality control in specimen collection, sampling, and record keeping.
• Process laboratory test requisitions via the laboratory information system (LIS) or other appropriate means.
• Conduct laboratory tests on specimens and enter result data into the computer.
• Assist donors before, during, and after donation; instruct patients on urine collection procedures.
• Clean and sterilize equipment, instruments, and work areas following safety and infection control procedures.
• Maintain and inventory laboratory equipment, instruments, and supplies; place orders as needed.
• Comply with all quality assurance policies and OSHA regulations related to safety, cleanliness, and infection control.
• Act as the point of contact for cleanup of hazardous materials.
• Ensure patient confidentiality and adhere to HIPAA guidelines.
• Maintain a professional appearance according to the established dress code.
• Check and resolve assigned tasks in the EMR program.
• Assist co-workers as needed and maintain open communication.
• Maintain a neat and organized work area, including stocking and cleaning.
• Demonstrate productivity during downtime and maintain emotional control in all interactions.
• Consistently report to work on time and complete full scheduled shifts.
• Adhere to company policies, procedures, and new directives as instructed.
• Perform other duties as assigned by administration.

Requirements

• High School Diploma or GED required.
• Graduation from an accredited medical vocational institution with a phlebotomy course diploma.
• Minimum one year of phlebotomy experience preferred; medical clinic experience helpful.

Skills

• Knowledge of phlebotomy techniques, medical laboratory principles, and standard laboratory tests.
• Familiarity with LIS applications and laboratory equipment use/maintenance.
• Understanding of safety, infection control, and quality assurance policies and regulations.
• Skill in performing efficient and effective blood draws and applying appropriate testing procedures.
• Ability to maintain quality control, confidentiality, and proper equipment use.
• Strong eye-hand coordination for patient comfort during blood draws.
• Ability to exercise independent judgment, problem-solve, and make decisions regarding results.
• Ability to establish cooperative relationships with patients, families, and staff.
• Strong organizational skills to manage workload effectively with high accuracy.

Physical Requirements

• Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced environment.
• Capable of sitting, performing data entry, and viewing a computer screen for extended periods.
• Daily standing, walking, bending, and maneuvering required.
• May require lifting up to 50 pounds or more to assist in patient transfers.

Environmental Conditions

• Occasional exposure to communicable diseases and biohazards.
• This is a safety-sensitive position.

Schedule

• Normal work hours are 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday through Thursday, and 8:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. on Fridays.
• Hours may vary depending on the needs of the position, department, or clinic.

Travel

Travel may be required.
