Responsibilities
- Performs venipuncture and capillary procedures safely, ensuring a patient-aware environment and considering patient age population.
- Receives specimens accurately and timely to ensure correct handling and processing.
- Ensures accurate patient and specimen identification at all times, compliant with laboratory labeling policies.
- Follows specimen collection policies for STAT, Timed (Urgent), heparin and drug protocols, routine, and outpatient draws.
- Manages supplies for clerical and phlebotomy areas, notifying as per protocol and distributing stock items appropriately.
- Prepares and triages specimens using a centrifuge as directed and routes them to laboratory sections for analysis.
- Maintains specimen integrity until triage or referral testing.
- Assists in care and maintenance of laboratory work area, furnishings, and equipment.
- Keeps outpatient draw area clean, orderly, and stocked with necessary supplies.
- Maintains phlebotomy trays in clean, stocked order.
- Maintains required records, reports, and statistics accurately.
- Performs clerical support duties, including retrieving and reporting results via phone, fax, and releasing to patients per laboratory policies.
- Operates necessary computer systems to perform job functions.
- Seeks advice and information when necessary, knowing limitations and asking for help.
- Participates as a team member and assists in related duties as requested.
Requirements
- High School Diploma or equivalent.
- Previous phlebotomy experience preferred.
- CPT 1 California State Certified.
