Essential Functions/Performance Expectations
- Obtains blood specimens.
- Checks the computer labels against the patient Midland Memorial Hospital (MMH) armband.
- Verifies positive patient identification per MMH policy.
- Performs veni-puncture and capillary sticks using the aseptic technique and in accordance with department procedures.
- Observes hospital isolation procedures.
- Follows Clinical Laboratory Standards Institute order of draw.
- Maintains specimen integrity.
- Captures and processes specimens to prepare them for laboratory testing.
- Limits lifting to 35 lbs. for clinical staff and 50 lbs. for non-clinical staff.
- Answers telephone calls, reads laboratory results, records requests for blood collections, answers general questions concerning test orders and collection, takes messages, or routes calls to the appropriate laboratory employee or section.
- Prepares specimens for reference laboratory dispatch and testing.
- Labels specimens according to policy.
- Verifies specimen integrity and adheres to established procedures for rejection of unacceptable specimens.
- Runs the computer work list to ensure that all orders have been processed.
- Contributes to the general laboratory functions and MMH needs.
- Attends regular department staff meetings and in-service training.
- Maintains compliance with laboratory and hospital policies and procedures, as well as safety practices.
- Keeps work area neat and clean and restocks daily supplies.
- Performs clerical functions associated with the designated laboratory section.
- Helps maintain files pertinent to the laboratory section.
- Acts as courier as needed.
Education And Experience
- High School diploma or equivalent preferred.
- No Experience required.
- Certified in Phlebotomy preferred or eligible.
- Must have valid driver license.
