Job Summary
To perform a variety of venipuncture techniques and collect and process blood specimens from patients in support of laboratory procedures used in the diagnosis and treatment of disease.Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Knowledge of blood processing and handling procedures. - Knowledge of relevant clinical and patient care regulations, policies, procedures, and standards. - Knowledge of infection control and sterile procedures. - Interpersonal skills to allay patient fears and interact with staff. - Ability to perform standard phlebotomy procedures and techniques. - Ability to comply with clinical protocol, specifications, and procedures. - Ability to complete and maintain documents and records.Responsibilities
- Performs a variety of routine blood drawing procedures, using standard equipment such as vaccutainer tubes and sleeves, tourniquets, syringes, and butterfly needles.
- Confers with patient to obtain information for laboratory records, explains procedures, allays fears, and elicits cooperation.
- Prepares, processes, labels, and stores patient specimens and samples according to established procedures.
- Maintains inventory of supplies; stocks supplies on carts and hand trays.
- Performs quality control procedures to maintain compliance with applicable regulations.
- Complies with safety, environmental, and/or infection control standards and practices.
Physical and Environmental Demands
Requires occasional bending, occasional lifting and carrying up to 10 pounds, occasional climbing, occasional crawling, occasional crouching/stooping, occasional kneeling, occasional pushing/pulling, occasional reaching, occasional sitting, constant standing, occasional twisting, and occasional walking.
