Phlebotomist
Job Summary
Draws blood from patients for analysis or other medical purposes.
Assembles equipment, such as tourniquet, needles, disposable containers for needles, blood collection tubes, gauze, cotton, and alcohol on work tray according to requirements for specified tests.
Verifies and records patient identity and converses with patient to explain procedures and allay fear of procedure.
Qualifications
- Promote consistent and positive patient interactions that advance the agenda of unparalleled patient service.
- Perform specimen collection while following the established policies and procedures of the Clinical Laboratory.
- Instruct patients on proper specimen collection procedures.
- Work efficiently and communicate effectively under stressful conditions and time constraints.
- Maintain strict confidentiality of work-related information.
- Practice good infection control by hand washing, wearing personal protective equipment, for the protection of patient and self while maintaining a neat, well-kept work area.
What qualifications you will need:
- Basic Cardiac Life Support must be obtained within 30 days of employment start date.
Licensure/Certification/Registration
- Phlebotomy certificate preferred.
Education
- High school diploma or equivalent.
Experience
- One-year hospital experience (including venipuncture experience) preferred.
- Familiarity with a hospital laboratory is desired.
- Medical terminology preferred.
