Requirements

Education: High school or equivalent.
National certification as a phlebotomy technician.
Experience: Two (2) years of medical experience in phlebotomy preferred.
Qualifications:

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Adheres to the department policy, time, and attendance guidelines.
  • Wears employee ID badge and follows dress code policy.
  • Collection of specimens using proper venipuncture or fingerstick technique.
  • Maintaining and recording of environmental conditions as required by CLIA.
  • Obtaining vitals and recording in patient’s medical record.
  • Testing specimens for hematology, urine dipsticks, sedimentation rates, blood, and INR.
  • Accurate recording of results.
  • Ordering laboratory tests appropriately, to include in-house, send-out, and reference labs.
  • Processing specimens.
  • Properly using centrifuge.
  • Assisting provider and patient during bone marrow biopsy – preparation, collection, processing, and packaging.
  • Facilitating office flow by preparing patients for office visits, chemotherapy, or shots, taking vital signs, and accompanying patients to their next treatment area.
  • Consulting physician regarding questionable laboratory results, and acting on physician instructions regarding patient care.
  • Complying with local, state, and federal regulations pertaining to the clinical laboratory.
  • Performing routine maintenance, cleaning, and troubleshooting of hematology analyzer, including calibrations as required.
  • Processing orders and restocking laboratory supplies.
  • Tracking patients to next point of service.
  • Participating in continuing education activities.
  • Attending staff meetings.

Knowledge

  • Knowledge of laboratory techniques to perform routine laboratory tests.
  • Knowledge of laboratory equipment and testing to operate, clean, and sterilize.
  • Knowledge of appropriate medical terminology to communicate with laboratory staff.
  • Knowledge of CLIA regulations, diagnosis coding, and Medicare policy as they pertain to the laboratory.

Skills

  • Skill in operating a variety of laboratory instrumentation.
  • Skill in preparing accurate reports concerning the results of laboratory tests.
  • Skill in reacting calmly to emergency situations.

Abilities

  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with physicians, patients, employees, and the public.
  • Ability to read, understand, and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to follow written protocols.
  • Ability to work independently.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality of sensitive information.

Physical Demands and Work Environment

  • Continually required to stand.
  • Continually required to walk.
  • Frequently required to sit.
  • Continually required to utilize hand and finger dexterity.
  • Occasionally required to climb, balance, bend, stoop, kneel, or crawl.
  • Continually required to talk or hear.
  • While performing the duties of this job, the noise level in the work environment is usually moderate, as experienced in a medical setting/practice.
  • The employee must occasionally lift and/or move 40 to 50 pounds or more frequently lift and/or move up to 20 to 25 pounds.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
