About the role
This onsite Phlebotomist role focuses on providing high-quality specimen collection and patient service in busy patient service centers across Manhattan. You will perform 20–40 blood draws per day, ensure accurate data entry and specimen processing, and support a smooth and professional experience for every patient.
Responsibilities
- Welcome and check in patients, completing intake and registration accurately when they arrive.
- Perform 20–40 blood draws per day using straight needles and/or butterfly needles, following established procedures and safety protocols.
- Collect and store specimens according to established procedures, ensuring proper handling and chain of custody.
- Label specimens accurately and perform data entry for test orders, patient information, and sample details.
- Centrifuge, split, and freeze specimens as required by specific test orders.
- Process specimens, including preparation for transport or testing, in alignment with laboratory standards.
- Update patient information and maintain accurate electronic records in the system.
- Record maintenance data for equipment and document activities related to specimen processing.
- Handle decontamination tasks and follow infection control and safety procedures to maintain a clean work area.
- Demonstrate proper phlebotomy techniques using straight needles and butterfly needles when needed.
- Provide courteous, professional customer service to patients, answering questions and helping them feel comfortable during the collection process.
- Work as part of a team of 2–3 phlebotomists per site to manage a high-volume patient flow of approximately 110 patients per day.
- Float between designated patient service center locations within Manhattan as assigned.
Requirements
- At least 1 year of phlebotomy experience (2 or more years preferred).
- Proficiency in performing blood draws, including use of straight needles.
- Strong data entry and computer skills for accurate patient and specimen information entry.
- Strong customer service skills with the ability to interact professionally and empathetically with patients.
- A high school diploma or GED.
- Ability and commitment to work every Saturday.
- Ability to follow established procedures for specimen collection, labeling, storage, and processing.
- Capability to work effectively in a busy, high-volume patient service environment.
Qualifications
- Experience using butterfly needles for blood collection.
- Prior experience in patient service centers or diagnostic laboratory settings.
- Flexibility to float between multiple locations within Manhattan.
- Phlebotomy certification is noted as part of the opportunity, though not required for consideration.
- Ability to record equipment maintenance data and follow decontamination and safety protocols.
